Speed Sensor location 1995 Ranger?
Speed Sensor location 1995 Ranger?
I have a 1995 Ranger with a 2.3 liter engine and automatic transmission. It works for moving light cargo around and carrying my kayak in the summer. Don't need a bigger engine for that.
My roommate was driving it for a few weeks after hitting a deer and said that the speedometer did not work sometimes. After the insurance company finally paid out for the car he had been driving, I repaired the car in my yard. Then just two months later I hit a deer with my car. While waiting on the insurance company, I decided to get the parts I need.
On my way back, the speedometer stopped working and it looks like the odometer stopped as well. Planning to replace the speed sensor due to being a common cause of the problem. Realize it could just be a loose wire connector but want to have a replacement sensor just in case.
The sensor is on the transmission? Front or back if so? Drivers side or passenger side? How hard to get to it? Anyone either have a photo or drawing where it is? There is a video replacing it but does not do a good job showing the location?

1995 thru 1997 Ranger 2WD has the VSS(speed sensor) on the tail shaft housing of the transmission, manual or automatic, drivers side(4x4 is on the transfer case)
Looks like this when removed: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...peedsensor.gif
Has 1 bolt holding it in, and when pulled out there should a gear on the end, this gear can be changed to calibrate speedometer for different tire sizes or axle ratios
It has a spot for a speedometer cable along with the 2 wire plug in for the VSS, 1994 and earlier used both, 1995-1997 used an electric speedometer/odometer, so just used the VSS
Check fuse 25 in the cab fuse box, long shot, but it powers the speedo/odo system
