Is there a timer on the drivers door dome light switch? 1996 B3000
Is there a timer on the drivers door dome light switch? 1996 B3000
Just curious. Rigged up an LED dome light to replace the original dome light which fell broke apart when I went to replace the bulbs.
Now the light comes on when the driver's door is opened, but it seems to take 20 seconds or so to go out when the door is closed. No delay on the light going out on the passenger door. Is there some kind of delay timer rigged to that switch? I installed such a timer on another car years ago as a mod.
I tried to remove the door switch, but was unsuccessful (the one on the bottom of the latching mechanism. I did spray lube down the switch since I had the latch unscrewed, but it wasn't worth the effort to pull the latch mechanism out and risk breaking any little plastic clips in the process.
While we're at it, why are there two switches hooked to the driver's door latching mechanism? What's the second/upper switch for?
Thanks!

Just the one switch at bottom of latch in 1995 to 2011, maybe you have a factory alarm, or power door locks
You just need to unplug the switch to disable it, unplugged means "door is closed"
LED or regular bulb wouldn't matter, LED might not work at all one way, but just reverse it and it will, but no delay in going off or coming on
GEM module behind the radio runs the cab electrics
When a door is opened the switch GROUNDS the GEM and it then turns on the "Door ajar" light on the dash, and also turns on Dome Light relay and dome light comes on
So you may indeed have a door switch that is sticking

Thanks, Ron. No power door locks, so no idea what that second/upper "switch" is. Looks substantially the same as the one on the bottom of the latch mechanism, so assume it's a switch. It does have an electrical connector on it.
Thought pulling the lower switch and cleaning it (or replacing it) would be a 10 minute job, but I could not get it to release out of the latch without pulling the latch out. Working inside the door was too hard, and I was afraid I'd break some 25 year old plastic part and make a 'not really a problem' problem into a real problem. Leave good enough alone!
It could indeed be that the switch is sticking and it's taking 15 - 20 seconds to move after closing the door.
BUT! I have read something about a "battery saver" feature on these trucks and wonder if the electronics turn off that dome light if it senses the door is closed.
EDIT - I found the Battery Saver in the Owner's Manual, so probably the bottom switch is sticking.

When the ignition is turned off, the vehicle will turn off battery voltage to all of these lights after 40 minutes: glove box, engine compartment, overhead console, mirror, courtesy and interior (including cargo) lamps.
This will prevent draining of the battery if these lights have been left on inadvertently or if a door is not completely closed. Battery voltage to these lamps will be restored when the remote entry transmitter is used, any door is opened, or the ignition
key is turned on again.
