Yes, it will work just fine, pull out the PRND21 and put your manual black plate in
1996-2003 Rangers work
1996-2001 Explorers, maybe 2002

For a 2WD it can be either a 2WD or 4x4 cluster, for a 4x4 it should be a 4x4 cluster but sometimes the bulbs are just missing for the 4WD lights so they can work

If you have a V6, 3.0l or 4.0l, and new cluster is also from a V6 then its plug and play for the tach
If you have a 4cyl and cluster is from V6 then you will need to change 1 wire and visa versa to make tach read correctly
What wire will I have to change? Want to do this swap, 1997 2.3 to a 2001 Sport Trac. It is a 5spd so I am trying to gain a tach that I don't have now. Thanks for any info.

Icon5 Compatibility Question

I have a 1997 Ranger 2.3L 5spd and the instrument cluster does not have a tach. I have found a 2001 Explorer Sport Trac cluster, from a vehicle with a V-6 engine, and was wanting to know if this was a plug and play option to replace my existing cluster? I know that there are some functions that are not available on my truck (check fuel cap, antilock, ect) but I just want the 6 gauges to function as they should. Cannot return it once I buy it and it ain't cheap! Thanks for any help!

No I don't think the Explorer clusters have the same wiring, not plug and play, but I don't have a wiring diagram for Explorer clusters

Ranger/Mazda B-series 1996-2003 clusters did have same wiring, plug and play
All are wired for tachs, cab wiring
Won't matter if cluster is from a 4cyl or V6, the tach will read correctly, this was a function of the wiring in the vehicle/cab
If you changed the ENGINE and computer from 4cyl to V6 then you would have to change the tach wiring

Here is 1997 Ranger/Mazda wiring for cluster
See if you can find a 2001 Sport Trac diagram to compare, I know the earlier Explorer cluster do not match Ranger wiring, but as said don't have a 2001 diagram

NOTE: The clusters from the above models will fit and the 6 gauges will work. However, a cluster from a different year or model may have a different layout and assortment of indicator lights - this is especially true of the later clusters compared to your 97.
Am I correct that a 2001 Sport trac will fit and function in my 97 ranger. Need to replace mine and found this one from a 2001 "Explorer Sport Trac" Don't know why they said "Explorer" Your input would be very much appreciated.

Believe Clusters for the 2001~2003 SportTrac & same era Ranger\MazdaB are the same fully interchangable Pre-HEC versions.
Click here for more info on these InstrumentClusters.

Help!

Hi new to the forum just got my 1995 ranger 5spd. No tach. I got one on ebay off a 97 ranger because I thought it would be plug and play. So I disconnected the battery, dropped the dash, and swapped clusters. Before putting back together I hooked up battery to see if everything worked before reinsallation. I get lights on the cluster but the engine won't turn over. I panicked thinking I had messed up and swapped back to the old cluster. Everything fine. What am I doing wrong?

1995 has different wiring than 1996-2003 clusters, its the same wires just in different places/pins

Diagrams for both below, you can repin 1995 wires to match 1996-2003, or find a 1995 cluster with Tach, 1994 or 1996 are not the same, 1995 was a one off year

Well ****.

Does anyone want to buy or trade a 98 ranger instrument cluster wt tach for a 1995 cluster wt tach? I don't want to send it back to the seller on account of my lack of knowledge.

I have a 97 cluster that I have tried for months to sell. I would just bite the bullet and send it back, get what refund you can and get the one you need. I would just say " won't fit" and be done with it. Good luck!
