Just bought a 1989 Ranger XLT 2.9l V6 (tips?)
Hey guys!
So I just bought an 89' Ranger XLT 2.9l V6. The truck is in great condition (frame and body) but I will be pretty much starting from scratch getting it running. The engine is in but no wiring is hooked up, transmission and crankshaft are in the bed of the truck along with various other parts (started, alternator, radiator, etc). So my question is does anyone have any tips on diagnosing and troubleshooting parts outside of the truck to determine whether to look into new parts? or just overall tips and tricks with these vehicles. I have owned and worked on a 1990 F150 so it's not all foreign but any knowledge would be appreciated.
Thank you!

Welcome to the forum
I assume you mean drive shaft, not crank shaft, is in the bed
If its a manual trans then its an M5OD-R1(M5R1) model
The M5R1 was very reliable, used until 2011 Rangers, it does use ATF, yes automatic transmission fluid in a manual trans
If Automatic its a A4LD model, used from 1985/6 thru 1994
A4LD, like all automatics needed regular servicing, check fluid for burnt smell
Not much you can check on engines and transmissions except for the fluids to see if there are any signs of issues
You can do leak down test on engine, compression test would need working starter motor
You should get one of these: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1989-Ford-T...-/133553390294
Called an EVTM, Google: 1989 Ford Ranger EVTM
Just an example of the book Ford makes every year, for every model, it was part of the Service/Shop manual set that Ford sent out to every Dealer shop for every model that year
Its often sold separately from the Shop manual sets
It is very detailed in wiring and where things are, its what the Ford mechanics needed to troubleshoot new models
People buy them, use them, then resell them, so there are usually a few available on ebay or similar sites for each model year
And when you resell it you get your money back, so usually "free" to use, lol
