Icon5 Plug on front side of 89 Ranger gas tank is leaking

Hello everyone,... I can't find any info anywhere or from anyone, including dealerships, about a fuel tank on an 89 Ranger XLT, w/2.9 manual. There is a hole in the front side, half way up that is leaking gas quite rapidly. There is a metal plug there, It is set in crooked and looks like something hit it, but still looks ok, just a little crooked and leaking.... Anyway, can anyone shed some light on this plug(?), and what it's for? I can probably get another at the junk yard, but this one may still be good. The tank is plastic, and the hole looks like it was factory made. Thanx in advance for any knowledge concerning this problem. ..........Sorry bout posting this in the new member intro's. It doesn't belong here. Is there any way to delete my post here or something?

Welcome to the forum

Nothing like that was on stock Ranger gas tanks that I have ever seen, which is why you can't find any info about it

Previous owner added that for.................................???, 1/2 way up is odd, so not a drain, maybe it was to fix a hole

Replace the tank or pull it out clean it and weld it, yes you can weld plastic if its a plastic tank
