1104C-44T Perkins swap

1104C-44T Perkins swap
I've looked into how simple it would be to put this is in, found an Allison that will bolt up and would need to extend or find a 2 inch longer drive shaft, the 4.4L turbo diesel would be great for power to weight and save on gas, reinforce the frame with is obvious from the fear if twist and heavier duty rear axle and double leaf springs added for extended max load, I like this light duty pickup, only positive comments, and ideas to help with this, thinking of using the extra engine bay realistate to add a radiator sideways as a passive cooler to help keep temps down or a dedicated oil sump for the turbo (3-6 quarts) with a cooler for that, any other engines that are diesel that would fit the 2002 ranger engine bay without a lift

Hey, Sounds interesting but, but... I'm thinking this is an older designed Engine !
a few questions:
1) Weight of the Diesel ?
2) Length of Diesel ?
3) How many Cylinders ?
4) Curious about the Trans, an Allison you said, what year, how many speeds, did you use an adapter ?
Thanks for the thread, could be of interest to more than me or you !

Sounds like a great project, expect I would be worried about the technology more than the fact it is a Diesel.
it will probably turn out great, but as you appear to be doing, do your homework, get the numbers together, see where it will be going... and compare to another Diesel setup, both n cost and power numbers.
Good Luck

I decided a long while back that the electronics in todays engines ARE a PITA, but I do not believe anyone or mechanical device can control the engine as well as electronics, so we are in a Catch 22 situation. I recently looked at the Cummins R2.8L, 4 cly TDi Diesel as a new engine for my '03 EDGE; Cummins had a sale on the motor with free shipping but the with emissions testing here in SoCal it's not that easiest to override, so I stopped the whole swap.
Why did you go to the Perkins Diesel ?

I'm going to be adding in a servo to slide a plate into the front of the turbo and if all else fails and runaway occurs have a fuel cutoff valve in the cab the I can reach that mounts at two points, top of the engine where it enters the block and a valve right below the seat from the tank

I have 3 rangers and the duratec engine I plan to move to my Lima 2.5 ranger or put onto a kit car with the super charger (root) and put a diesel between 2.6 and 5L in, I've even thought about a cat 3208 and have a tranny for it but that's gonna require milling out the middle of the ranger and I'm gonna miss my middle row seats

I thought AZ was an easy state for emissions.
Also, less than 400 lbs. sound good, I am thinking the R2.8 TDI is in that range too.
How about the heater, the AC units stick out more than I think necessary but they in turn get in the way.
I was thinking of replacing mine IF I ever get to that point. Thinking something like a Vintage Air Unit, they have a smaller one that would fit under the dash and should provide more than stock Heat and A/C !
A smooth Firewall would look good in the engine bay.
Hope it all goes together without a lot of extra work... waiting for the pictures !

People have swapped in the 4BT Cummins diesels into Rangers
Might be some tips here on overall issues you may run into: https://www.4btswaps.com/forum/forum.php
The 1995 and up Rangers used electric speedometers, they want to see 8,000PPM(pulse per mile) for calibration, speedo/odo share the same signal
Dakota Digital makes interfaces for speedometers and tachometers, if you will keep the Ranger instrument cluster
Temp, oil pressure and fuel were still analog gauges in 2002, 2004 and up cluster wouldn't work for this
oil pressure gauge was just on or off, gauge can't be adapted to show "real" oil pressure
