I have been bumping this idea around for a while....
Mine is a 2004 XLT, extended cab, 4x2, 4.0L SOHC, AT with 231k+ miles.
A few years ago I had the 60/40 seat reupholstered in leather and the rest of the interior is in excellent shape. I have kept the maintenance up on it and replaced the cheesy Ford AM/FM cassette radio with an Alpine unit and upgraded all the speakers with Kenwoods.
The idea I have been kicking around but have not brought to fruition is to replace the stock instrument cluster with a Dakota Digital one. The problem is, they do not currently have an instrument cluster designed for the Ranger so it would have to be a new custom design, which they are willing to do for a price. Four years ago they quoted nearly $2500 to do one.
Dakota Digital does make one for the Mustang and the instrument clusters look very much alike. However, I have to wonder if the circuitry and other components within the system are shared across the two platforms? I am far from an expert, especially on anything Ford or newer than 1978.... However, back in the day when I was bending wrenches for a living, it was common for manufacturers to share as many components across their divisions and models as possible. A windshield for a Camaro was the same one as the Firebird, etc.
Does anyone know if the Mustang and Ranger instrument clusters are interchangeable?
