My 2000 3.0 4x4 Ranger sounds like an old rusty door when I turn the wheel is there a grease fitting on the steering column?

Is the sound inside or outside the truck? if outside check your ball joints they make a similar sound when dry and the factory units are not grease able i had to replace mine.

Good point! Fords and Rangers are notorious for both.
