zabeard 03-19-2009 11:52 AM

yeah i personally think they are junk. I want one with a fixed output

05prerunner 03-19-2009 12:14 PM

STAK or Atlas!!!

Gearhead61 03-19-2009 12:33 PM

I thought you were planning on a stak 3 anyway zach?

zabeard 03-19-2009 12:46 PM

If I can afford it. I need another alternative. lol I am just not sure that i can justify spending 3 grand on a tcase.

You should be able to find a BW1356 or BW4407 that will bolt up to your transmission.

zabeard 03-19-2009 01:11 PM

The BW4407 is a fixed output? Also I have a 1356 but its my understanding that the output shaft on the 4r100 is different from the older E4OD.

Know anything about that Bob?

You seem to know what interchanges and I trust your word over all this other information I stumble across on this world wide web!

INT3RC3PTOR 03-19-2009 04:33 PM

yeah, gota trust Bob over the Internets!

AFAIK, the 4406 as found in your Navigator has been used behind both the 4R100 and the 4R75W. There very well could be a difference in the output shafts but I am not aware of it. For whatever it's worth, my manual 4406 and linkage was from a 2003 F-series and it bolted right up to my 1999 Explorer 4R70W (six bolt, 31 spline).

The BW4407 manual that I have seen has a fixed output and was used in the 96/97 F250/F350's, even diesels, so it should be one badass piece. Unfortunately, they can be expensive and hard to find. I had a line on one but it got away, so I gave up and used the more common manual 4406 instead.

zabeard 03-19-2009 08:24 PM

Awesome Bob. I appreciate it. I think I know where a 96 F250 is, might have to check it out at the local yard.

V8 Level II 03-20-2009 04:26 AM

Actually, what I said before is misleading. I mentioned that the 4407 was used in 96~97 because that's what my brother has in his F350 diesel. However, the transfer case has also been used for several years in newer F250/F350's and may possibly go all the way to current production. Using a newer 4407 may help if you find that Ford changed the trans output shaft dimensions. It should also make it easier to find a low miles case.

zabeard 03-20-2009 05:38 AM

Even better chance of finding one then. The superduty didnt use the 4r100 for very long if i understand it correctly. Seems like I read something about a 5r100 but I am not sure the differences. I would think if there are shaft changes I should be able to interchange what I need to to get them to work together.

The way I see it, it's 3 grand you'll never have to spend again. I'd recomend a stak over an atlas FWIW.

zabeard 03-20-2009 06:06 AM

Oh yes that is for sure. Ive looked at both and I like the stak the most.

For several years, Ford has been using a kind of code built into many of the auto transmission model numbers. Using the others as a guide, my guess is that 5R100 means:

5=> number of forward gear ratios
R=> rear wheel drive (primary)
100=> 1000 lb-ft max input torque rating.

zabeard 03-20-2009 11:10 AM

So we could probably assume the 4r100 and the 5r100 have a similar if not identical tailshaft and spline count on the output shaft.

I want to go junkyard searching now!

NicksterSVT 03-20-2009 04:33 PM

I still have the electric one because it was easier and more cost effective to use at the time. The 4r100 was used behind 98-04 7.3L PSDs. It's a damn good tranny. The 5r100 has been used behind the '03 6.0L and up. Another good tranny also. I know of dodge guys swapping in 4r100s behind their cummins engines or leaving them in and using an adapter plate to mate the Cummins to the 4r100 when they swap out the powerstoke in the ford.

The 4r100 is nearly bullet proof. With a mildly tuned engine it will hold up just fine in stock form. I have the trans-go http://www.transgo.com/sk_ford.php kit in mine with a BTS torque converter. Holding up really well right now.

Dangerranger01 04-06-2009 08:38 PM

anything new??
maybe i missed it, but what rear end are you using? will a 8.8 put up with this much power?
