I recently transferred to Cal State Long beach to study business management and marketing. As I began to look for housing for the next few years, my parents and I decided that it would be best to purchase a house that I will be able to live in, and have room mates to help pay the mortgage. I am VERY fortunate to have this opportunity, so if you have anything negative to say about that... please refrain.

I received the keys to the house today on 10/2/08.

Specs:
-3 bedroom
-2 bath
-2 car detached garage
-64 feet of RV parking between garage door and gate
-1528 sq ft on an 8,200 sq foot lot
-built in 1955

The house will be getting the following done within the next few weeks/months (I'm sure there is more I forgot):
-Dual pane vinyl windows
-Granite counter tops
-Tile floors in kitchen and bathrooms
-Refinished cabinets and hardwood floors
-New shower/tubs/completely overhauled bathrooms
-New carpet in bedrooms
-All new light fixtures and ceiling fans
-Recessed lighting
-New electrical outlets and switches
-New appliances
-Backyard concrete demolition...some grass is going in.
-Paint inside and out
-New fencing
-Landscaping
-New sliding door to backyard
-New kitchen door to the side yard and new front door
-New doors and casings in bedrooms
-Crown molding and 4" baseboards throughout

I am going to do as much work as I can on the house, but since I am in school right now and working weekends we will be hiring out the major construction. My brother and I will be moving in at the end of october, so the house must be livable by then.

I will keep this thread updated with progress as I am VERY excited to be getting a place of my own for the next few years.

NICE HOUSE!!!! I love the panel ceiling!! That's a nice find, so whats up with the circus tent? Congrats, ever think of a french door instead of a sliding glass door,I hated the sliding glass door at my old house...

 

Looks like a solid project house, good luck with it, they sure are a lot of work!

 

It's a fume tent. The place is being smoke bombed. It kills ants, roaches, silver fish, basically any insects living in the walls/floors/ceiling....pretty much the entire house.

 

Ah welcome to the world of home ownership. I have things I planned to do 3 years ago when I bought this place that I still haven't done.

There is alot you cant really see. The linoleum in the bathrooms and kitchen is coming up. There is subfloor damage in the master bathroom. The walls in the main bathroom at just drywall, so that needs to be taken care of. We are building the house like its an investment to sell in the next few years.

Why did you hate the slider? The french doors are about $1500 more and I'm not sure it is really worth it.

Well since I am not footing the bill...hopefully we can get most of what we need done. If this was MY house that I was paying for, most of the projects would take a long time. Since it is an investment property that i will be living in, hopefully we get everything done rather quickly.

Party...few of us might be playing some beer pong next saturday, but the house will already be torn up/under construction so we'll see.

 

My personal opinion.... In my experience cheap or expensive they never seal real well (might not matter in your climate area), ants and bugs seem to get through them more readily... When crud gets in the sliding tracks they door can be a PITA to get to slide easily... The locks are mostly a joke and can be popped with hand tools on most, yea you can kick a door in but thats MUCH louder! Then again they are probably nicer in warmer climates, being in N. Ga it can get really cold in the winter so I just didn't like them... and HOLY CRAP 1500 for a french door... SHEESH!!

On our house we flip we always have party's in the when there under construction. You be surprised how much work drunk people get done on taring out walls ect. They can't make a bigger mess then there already is also. One night the girls decided to paint walls drunk and know that was a site to see in the morning....

Ordered the windows/sliding door today! Tomorrow I'll be doing some gardening and meeting with contractors.

Yes... I need to tear out some trees, trim bushes. But I'll be sure to think of norcal when I go get a drink of water.

Figured I'd throw this up here... I tore out this palm tree last thursday. I was going to just rip it out with the truck but only had some weak rope, tow straps were all 45 min away and i wanted that tree out.
