4.0 to a 3.0 swap

Good morning fellas! I got a '06 3.0 ranger and I came across marketplace listing of a 4.0 ranger with a bad engine. I wanted to buy the one off marketplace and put my 3.0 engine in it since it was 4x4. I'm just not sure how difficult it will be to put a 3.0 engine in a 4.0 truck. Is the wiring the same? Is the mounting the same? Is there a difference if mine was RWD and this one is 4x4?

You don't mention the year of the 4.0l 4x4 Ranger?
That will matter

But no, not an easy swap
3.0l can't bolt to 4.0l transmission, and 2WD 3.0l transmission can bolt to 4x4 transfer case
So you will need a 4x4 3.0l transmission

2006 3.0l computer is "matched" to its instrument cluster, so BOTH need to be moved to the 4.0l 4x4 vehicle, which is where YEAR matters alot
Yes, engine wiring is also different, so 3.0l engine wiring must also be transferred over, this again makes the YEAR matter

Overall a better idea would be to sell the working 3.0l 2WD Ranger and used that money to buy the 4x4 Ranger and fix the 4.0l engine

Gotcha! Thanks. That's what I wanted to know. The truck on marketplace was a 2005. But see. I heard a good reputation for 3.0's being very easy to work on. I actually just had to change my starter. It was a breeze. But what is the reputation for 4.0's? Good trucks? Worth switching from 3.0 to 4.0? Is the longevity there?

2001-2011 4.0l is a big jump on power from a 3.0l
3.0l is rated at 145HP
4.0l SOHC is 205HP

They are get about the same MPG

3.0l Vulcan was a very reliable engine, used from 1986 thru 2008 in a few Ford vehicles
4.0l SOHC was a newer design, 1997, which is why the MPG is about the same, might get 1-2MPG better with 3.0l

The 1997-2002 4.0l SOHC engines had a problem with timing change tensioners, Ford found the problem in 2000/2001 and redesigned the tensioners but they were not in new engines until 2003 model years
After that the 4.0l SOHC was reliable, but tensioners need to be changed every 100k miles
A 2001-2003 4.0l SOHC was also reliable IF its tensioners were changed to the new design as well, before any problems
They are fairly easy to change, 90min job with basic hand tools

Oh wow! Big jump of power there in the horsepower! Well If 4.0s have such a good reputation I think I'll just work my way up to getting a 4.0 and sell my 3.0 truck even though it's a phenomenal working truck!! I was just worried if worse came to worse how difficult would a 4.0 be to fix but sounds like not too difficult!
