The other day I just messing around in the mud an noticed that from a dead stop my ranger was slow on take off. And i was wondering if everyone's ranger was like this?

 

Its in 4wd so more parts to move.

 

Well i had a 99 s-10 and never had the problem.

 

S10s make torque sooner than our engines.

Yeah. Max torque is at 3000(i think) RPM on the SOHC engines. The older pushrod 4.0 made it sooner. The S10 was also a pushrod engine.

 

gee

lets make it turn another drive shaft, another R&P, oh yea, 2 more tires buried in mud.. and wonder why its got less power.


Thats why my truck is either in 2wd or 4low.

4HI is for women. 4LO FTW!

4:56 gears FTW!!

 

4 high is useful for not spinning your tires on grass! And for on roads covered in snow. Everything else 2 wheel or 4 low.

 

DING DING DING!! Except for snow covered streets, that IMO is the only reason for 4HI.

 

And burning your clutch. Don't forget about that one.

 

Yup! Was reminded of that one after a 14hr graveyard shift pulling a huge broken tree branch.

 

Your right lol, I dont think I have ever used 4hi on a trail. But then again, have 3.73's so I can't lol

 

I use 4HI for snow and mud to keep wheel speed up. Other than that its low.

 

i've never used 4hi, I'm guessing winter will be the first and only time. I love the torque of 4:10's in 4LO

 

I'll join in on the 4hi hating.
What's amusing about many a Ford owners manuals is the line that says, "You may never need 4lo..." I think that line should be revised to say, "You may never need 4hi."

4hi on even a easy trail works exceedingly well to heat up automatic transmissions and to help make stalling out easier in a manual.

agree! at the dunes 4low my trans runs at 150, where as in 4hi its around 190

 

I still used low, just threw it in 2nd or 3rd.

how about never leaving 4lo?
