2.5l harmonic balancer bolt

Im in the process of rebuilding the motor, the starter broke a bolt so it needs to be replaced, and currently the valve cover is not on the head. I put the harmonic balancer on before I put the timing belt on. Ended up tightening it and now I need it off. The motor keeps turning and I don’t know of a way to wedge it without breaking anything. Any ideas?

Yes, use a rope down spark plug hole when BOTH VALVES ARE CLOSED
You can see when #1 will be at TDC and both valve close, turn crank 1/4 turn, 90deg Before TDC
Feed rope down #1 spark plug hole, don't need alot, it will coil up, I use tangle free but never had issue with hemp rope.
Turn crank until piston pushes rope against head, it will be lock in that direct.
You can do the same in the other direction by turning crank to After TDC, feed in the rope and turn crank back the other way

And NO, it doesn't hurt piston, head, push rod or crank, WAY more explosive power on those parts when that cylinder fires.

You can also use this method to change valve guide seals with head(s) in place, rope holds the valves up so you can remove the keepers and springs to change the guides
