check engine light

Hello,

I have a 2001 ford ranger 2.3 liter 5 speed 167k miles. My check engine light came on yesterday and I noticed it had been running a bit slow to accelerate h for a few days. I replaced plugs 4 months ago, cylinder pack 2 years ago, as well as wires.

I just had a new water pump put in last week.

Check engine code at auto zone said P02177 / P02187. 1st cylinder bank misfiring. he reset it and I drove 20 miles without light coming back on.

What steps should I take to diagnose?

I was going to pull first plug (closest to me) 4 cylinder and if that is clean, then have compression check done and look at replacing cylinder pack?

Could this be a sensor issue? It has been very cold in new england if that means anything.

Thanks in advance

Pull the plugs check them out clean/replace if needed. Also start the truck at night and pop the hood and check for spark leak from your plug wires. Easy to do all you have to do is look around for sparks jumping from your plug wires.

That. sounds like a wire issue.

.
these codes indicate a lean condition that is showing up through your computer. I would look for a vacuum leak & also check the fuel filter for being stopped up (not getting enough fuel, starvation, henceforth a lean condition possible. ) Google po2177, then po2187. read it, then it may help you. Good luck.If you are having a misfire problem then you have another code for that not these 2 codes. Google that also(misfire code for ford ranger 2.3)

A misfire code would be A P030x code, not what you got.

In addition to checking/replacing your fuel filter, buy a can of mass air flow sensor cleaner and clean your mass air flow sensor, let it dry and reinstall it.
