7.5 axle handle 33’s?

Hey guys new to forum and Ranger...

2003 2.3L 5 speed sitting on a 7.5 axle with 3.73’s.. have plans of going with the Maxtrac 6” lift kit and stuffing some 33’s under with a new gear ratio of 4.56 but now I’m seeing people are saying the axle will explode even with the regear.. any truth to this?

I do 99% pavement and 1% very light “off road” to go mountain bike riding or fishing. Don’t drive aggressive and the most I’ll ever push it is 3k rpm. Please save me from the why do all that on a rwd 2.3 especially if I don’t wheel but I love the looks alright don’t hate! It’ll make me happy haha.

Now I know swapping to the 8.8 is ideal but I’m not trying to spend even more money than I already will be if the 7.5 will be able to handle it... shop is charging me $1k for the regear which is considered a good deal here in Northern California so I imagine having the axle swapped is going to bump that up significantly. thanks in advance.. & sorry if this is a beat topic..

Yes, the larger tire size is hard on the 7.5" or 8.8" Ranger axles, the axle shafts are the same size on either, 28 spline, 1.21inch diameter

So if you are concerned then you would want to go with 8.8" Explorer rear end, its 31 spline with 1.32 diameter
But its not a direct swap, there is welding involved to relocate leaf spring perches

No, they don't "exploded", lol, the axles can twist because they can't handle the torque, but a 2.3l Duratec is only rated at 143HP so I doubt that would happen

You could switch to a Ranger 8.8" which is a direct bolt in, and put in 4.56 ring and pinion set, then if you did twist an axle you could go with Explorer 8.8" and take out 4.56 set and move it to explorer axle
That would be the only reason to swap out the 7.5" to a Ranger 8.8", in my opinion

thanks for the reply and clarification. Yeah I would like to avoid doing any type of swapping if possible. So it sounds like since the 2.3 doesn’t have much power and I won’t be driving it hard the stock 7.5 with swapped 4.56 gears will handle the 33’s fine long term confidently?
