SMALL LEAK IN EVAP SYSTEM...

My mechanic did a smoke test on my Ranger and found a leak at the fuel tank under the truck bed. They want $249.00 to fix it but I don't want to spend that much to fix a small leak. Can anyone tell me which hose on the fuel tank goes to the evap system. My crappy Haynes manual doesn't even have a photo or diagram of that. I appreciate any help you can give me.

The most common problem I've read here for the past few years is the filler tube develops cracks in it.Usually near the top of the tank.

Is the filler tube metal or rubber where it attached to the tank? Also is the large hose which comes out of the tank the evap hose?

Filler hoses are the most common to cause an Evap leak.
Theres gonna be 3 tiny hoses on top of your fuel pump, two for fuel, one for a breather tube.
i'm willing to bet its the filler tube. Its a rubber outer with i believe another tube inside of it.

Hey guys, thanks for all the information. Don't know if I feel comfortable dropping the tank myself, but I might try. If I do I will take photos and post them on the diy forum.

Pull your fuel cap off and check the rubber seal for cracks.

Don't drop the tank.
Pull the bed off instead. Then you can inspect the rest of the hardware on the frame at the same time.

Thanks OTRtech, I read that somewhere that it's easier to remove the bed. The Problem is I live in and apartment complex so I will have to find somewhere to do that. It probably takes two people to lift the bed off of the truck too. I wonder if I could just prop it up somehow to inspect the top of the tank.....hummmm.

Remove the tail gate then move the bed back far enough for access , leaving it resting on the back of the frame. You only need it back a couple feet.

Thank you, that is a great idea, I think I will try that. Do I have to disconnect the fuel filler tube and disconnect the tailights?

Yes , disconnect the fill tube from the box side and unplug the light harness.
You will have to cut some plastic ties that hold the wires to the frame.

Again thank you so much. I feel much better about attempting this repair. Hey feel free to take a trip to Florida and give me a hand. I'm sure it's warmer here than where you live.lol

6* here now. I can't take the heat unless I'm thawing out next to my wood stove.

Dang Ken, that gave me a chill just reading your post. I'm a florida boy to the core. Thank you for all of your posts and stay by that wood stove or in your truck.
