chugging when first starting up

I have been noticing this a little as of late when I would start my Ranger it would chug a little bit until I put it in either R or D and drove (as little as a 20 feet) just to get it going... its like the idle doesnt catch correctly when it first starts, after I drive a bit its perfectly fine even at a stopped position.

Last night was the first time i started it and it chugged out (until it stalled) a couple times until i had to hold my foot lightly on the gas to get it aroudn 1000 rpms and then i drove out of my parking spot and stopped in a couple hundred feet... perfectly fine!! So i shut it off again, pulled the key and then restarted it and it started fine. I have noticed this chugging only happens the minority of the time (maybe 20-30%). Yesterday was the first time it completly stalled though.

Any thoughts as to what I could check or what the problem is.. I would like to get this taken care of because I would be ticked if this happened and it wouldnt start up and I was far from home or something. See sig for specs, its an automatic 4.0 V6

Maf= Mass air flow. its the sensor by the airbox. you can get maf cleaner at you local auto parts store, or use electrical cleaner. As far as plugs go, you can't go wrong with the stock Motorcrap Platinums.

Look at your air box where the air filter is. Between the box itself and the flexible hose, there shold be a short length of tube with a sensor plugged into it. This is the maf, and the tube is the maf housing. I'm at work, sorry no pics. to clean it, loosen the hose clamp and remove the hose, unplug the wires at the sensor, and remove the lid from the airbox. now, looking down the tube, you should be able to see the sensor from both sides. Spray it down liberally with the cleaner and let it dry. If I'm leaving anything out, feel free to fill it in you guys.

Cool, I just went out and bought 6 of the Bosch +2 plugs (they only had the +2 's not the 4's...

Anyway I need suggestions on how to get them out.. I have a 5/8th socket with boot and a couple 3-4in extensions and a 10in one.. I was only able to get 1 of the 6 plugs out... The frontmost drivers side plug was the easiest, the whole driver side plugs look easy because they are somewhat exposed, but there is a metal rail in the way and I cant get in there on a decent angle to get the others out... I really need suggestions on how to get the passenger side plugs out because I can barely see them below all the hoses, etc...

Suggestions wanted, i now have 1 new out of six plugs, and I believe my plugs were changed about 1-2 years ago along with wires.

To see if it's your idle air control valve start the engine, while its "chugging" pull the wire connector off of the IAC valve. If the chugging stops its the IAC valve. You can unbolt it and spray some cleaner into it and let it sit to loosen the carbon, then spray some air into it and let it dry. I'd recommend you go ahead and buy one though as cleaning it will only solve the problem temporarily. I think I paid about $75 dollars for one.

well the plugs look like they are somewhat upwards facing, but maybe if I have enough room to get in there... hmmm.. I wonder if that works on the 95 year one as well?
