02 Ranger to 02 Explorer frame
02 Ranger to 02 Explorer frame
I currently own an 02 Explorer 4WD that I drove until the front end decided to cr*p out. Was wanting a truck again anyways so bought a 99 Ranger XLT Supercab 4WD that may need engine or tranny swap if we can't trace down the issues. I used to own an 02 Ranger Std cab 2WD that my brother now owns.
All 3 of these have the same 4.0. All 3 have a 5 speed auto. The tranny in the Explorer is the 5R55W while both Rangers have the 5R55E according to Ford ETIS.
My brother plans to swap the Ranger (118" WB) to the Explorer (114" WB) so he will have 4WD. He's done lots of bod/frame mods including lift kits where the frames are different lengths.

The 1999 transmission won't work with either 2002 computer, its missing the ISS sensor, added in 2001 to the 5R55's series
ISS sensor is external and just above the shifter on drivers side if you want to look for it
The W just means its a wider ratio, vs E
E also has a dipstick, W didn't if memory serves
But the solenoids and wiring is the same, so should be plug and play between the two 2002 models
The 1999 Ranger has a 4.0l OHV engine, the trans bolt patterns are the same but the engine is much different than the 4.0l SOHC in the 2002's
So 2002 computers can't run the 4.0l OHV, and 1999 computer can't run the 4.0l SOHC
So the 1999 Ranger is the odd man out on some things
EDIT:
There is some confusion with the abbreviation "ISS"
Input Shaft Speed(ISS) sensor was on earlier 5R transmissions but was NEVER actually used by the computer, it was next to bell housing on top side of trans housing
If an early 5R trans was being swapped out for later model(with no ISS by bellhousing), Fords tech update was to cut the ISS connector off and strip and twist the 2 truck harness wires together, then weather-proof the connection, lol
Intermediate Shaft Speed(ISS) sensor was added to 5R in 2001 model year, located just above shifter on drivers side, it IS used/needed by 2001 and up computers
