Ranger will turn over but will not fire
Ranger will turn over but will not fire
I have a 2000 2.5 2wd with 108k. It started skipping coming up the highway (the skip was periodic and occurred mostly under load) but no check engine light. I cut the truck off and gave it a minute. I went to crank it back up and it turned over but did not fire. I checked all of the plug wires, battery connections, and I listened for the fuel pump to prime and it did. Still no fire. I unhooked the MAF sensor and plugged it back in. The truck started after pumping the gas and turning for a few seconds longer than usual. I got the truck home and bought MAF sensor cleaner and followed the instructions with that. It did fine for a day. This morning I went to crank it and I got turn over but no fire. I unhooked the MAF and plugged it in as well as left it unhooked and still no fire. Fuel pump relay is good and I hear the pump priming. Could this be the fuel filter or something in the fuel system or a timing sensor? Any help would be awesome. Thank you.

First thing you do on any engine with a "Crank but no start" is 50/50 test, add fuel manually to the engine
This can be spraying Quick Start, or Carb cleaner or gasoline into the intake and then cranking engine
If it starts and dies then its a fuel system problem
If it doesn't start then its a spark problem
50/50
Never assume, fuel pump working just means fuel pump is working, lol, which is good, it doesn't mean fuel injectors are opening.
Adding fuel manually is simple and easy
The 2.5l Lima engine uses a timing BELT, these need to be replaced every 80k miles or so, and they can slip or break when older, won't hurt the engine but engine won't start.
Just to take that off the table look behind timing belt cover to make sure CAM is tuning when engine is being cranked
Many have wasted time on non-fixes when they have a broken timing belt on these engines, so just a quick look to take that off the table.
If engine starts and dies by adding fuel manually then yes could be clogged fuel filter, only $10-$15 to replace so worth it to try, and should be done every 5 years or so anyway
If engine doesn't start by adding fuel manually...................and you have checked timing belt!!!, then yes, it could be a failed CRANK(CKP) sensor, not Cam sensor(CPS)
CKP sensors rarely fail, but rarely is not never, they are not hard to change on 1995 and up Lima engines
