'99 3.0L engine and tranny swap
Hey guys,
So I recently got a 1999 Mazda B3000 4x4 2door supercab (not sure what the supercab option is called for mazda).
The tranny and engine are both leaking and while I intend to clean and isolate them, I ultimately plan to swap both out for newer and better maintained ones.
I've been doing some reading around for swapping to different engines and it looks like most people recommend moving up to the 4.0, but I'd like to maintain my fuel economy. Not too much discussion on swapping to a 2.3L though the duratec seems like it could be worth it.
However, I've never done a swap before and changing the harness and multiple other parts just to get the engine to fit seems a bit intimidating. I have a friend with a home shop that will be helping, though I don't know how much time I'll have to work with him since he lives an hour away. May be best to just go with something I can drop in and have ready within a weekends time.
So I'm starting to think I may just look for a newer 3.0L vulcan that has less miles and was better maintained; or even rebuilt by a reputable shop with a warranty.
I'm curious if I'm missing any other good options?
I do landscaping so some power with the v6 is nice, but I also commute long distances so fuel economy is important.

If you're looking to get it done in one weekend without any kind of problems, a straight-up 3.0 swap would be your best bet. At the most all you would have to do is take the upper and lower intake manifolds from your current truck engine and bolt them into the new engine. Easy peasy. Just make sure the drive shaft is going to work. It should but you never know.

When the time comes swap in 3.0l and same style/model trans
Then sell the truck and buy one with engine you want
Swapping engine sizes requires same work regardless of the size you chose
Engine/trans, computer and engine wiring harness for that size engine and trans
Exhaust and driveline(s), plus wiring splices and bits and pieces.
This is why the 5.0l V8 is a popular swap when a swap is what you want to do
Same work, and you can't buy a Factory V8 Ranger
You can buy a 2.3l or 4.0l Ranger
