Hard to start
Hard to start
Hello all,
I have a 97 3.0 with 140k miles that is hard to start only when the engine is at normal operating temp AND the outside air temperature exceeds 90 degrees. At 90 degrees it will start 60% of the time first try. At 100 maybe 10% first try. This is a problem when I need to stop for gas or make a trip to the grocery store and the truck doesn't have at least 30 minutes to cool down. Again, only happens when the engine is warm and outside temp is higher than 90. Cranks perfectly but no combustion. Otherwise the truck runs great.
Help me help my mechanic help me help you....

Welcome to the forum
First lets see if it is a Spark or Fuel issue
Get some Starting Fluid(ether in a spray can)
On next hot day drive it home or where you can pop the hood
Try to start it to confirm a No Start
Pull off the Brake Booster Vacuum hose and spray starting fluid into the engine, replace hose and try to start.
If it starts right up then fuel or fuel mix is the problem
If it still just cranks then Spark is the problem.
Fuel mix is set by temperature of engine coolant and intake air temp
ECT sensor is for engine temp, 2 wire sensor by thermostat
IAT sensor is for air temp, it is part of MAF sensor in 1997 models
Either sensor can get HOT just after engine is shut off especially on a hot day, causing a bad fuel mix.
Electronics hate heat, hot wires have higher resistance
