Possible engine mounts need replacing.
Possible engine mounts need replacing.
Hello I have a 2002 ranger edge with 3.0 and 224k miles with an auto trans and 2wd. When I put the truck in drive I hear this slight metal noise and when I give it just a little gas I hear it more. When I brake you can really hear the metal noise. Also when I put it into reverse it does the same thing. It sounds like its coming from the engine bay or front suspension. I think its an engine mount. Listen closely in the videos.

Open the hood
Start the engine
Look thru the gap under the hood at the engine
Shift into Drive, foot on the brake
Give it a little gas, foot still on the brake
Engine should lift up on one side but just a bit and no noise
Let off the gas, should be no noise as engine lowers back down
Do same test but in Reverse, other side of engine will lift up
It will be easy to see and hear if a motor mount is breaking or broken

I don't really think they are "broken" I think they are worn out enough that the engine is slightly shifting forwards and backwards when I start to brake and accelerate. For some reason when I'm in neutral I have none of these issues.
