Engine Compatability

Hey all. First-time poster, so pardon me if I didn't find the answer already.

I have a 2000 Ranger XLT 4x4 with the 4.0L V6. I was wondering if the same size engine from a 2005 would be compatible. The 8th letter of my VIN is X.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Welcome to the forum

No, 1990-2000 Rangers used the 4.0l OHV(VIN X) engines, 2001 to 2012 Rangers used 4.0l SOHC(VIN E) engines

Same displacement but different types of engines

You could swap engine with its computer and engine wiring harness.
These 4.0ls did have the same motor mounts and transmission bolt patterns
Also some exhaust system work

But..........better to fix the 4.0l OHV and then sell that Ranger to buy a 4.0l SOHC Ranger

Yes an no. It'll bolt up but you will need to do some wiring. It's a different engine. You'll need the pcm, some oxygen sensors, you'll have to wire up the new Pats system. What you're wondering is the same thing I have done to my truck. You'll have to find a way to make the electrical 4x4 work. I just went with a manual t-case and 4x2 pcm to make things easier. There is more you'll need to do but I can't think of it right now. You can look up my sohc swap thread if you like. I've done it to two rangers.
