Help!! Gas Mileage....
#26
Jarmey, when I lowered my 5th gear shift point from 42 to 35 my 40mph instant readings went from 27mpg to 40mpg. Even though I'm kinda lugging along at 1300rpms & 40mph (40mph zones on my daily drive) it's got plenty of power to keep up with traffic.
I'm noticing that when the pcm is commanding more power it usually increases timing. Not fuel. Lower rpms almost always means less fuel used.

Yeah i agree entirely, i keep my truck as low as i can. Sometimes its so low i can hear a grinding in the transmission which i think its a chain in the t-case?? but its just cause its too low and then i shift up. But yeah its crazy to think that driving with slower accel and lower rpms can easily raise mpgs 5+

thanks to peoples input i have actually driven different and i filled up today and i yielded 285 miles to 15 gallons of fuel so roughly 19 mpg and all of my driving was in the city and my truck is rated 15 19 so i was getting high mileage in the city which i am up 3 mpg from my used to driving thanks for everyones input.

Someone posted that the OHV 4.0 got better mileage. That is TRUE. When Ford went to the SOHC 4.0l, they also made the front axle assy and driveshaft turn all the time. Un-like the OHV motors. This new set-up sucks! My 1997 got about 25-30mpg on the highway. My 02 sohc gets maybe 16mpg hwy!

well, with my 2006 FX4, (stock) i've gotten 22.5 MPG (all highway), realisticly i'm getting probably 19MPG combined. in the winter it drops to about 16MPG with warm-ups and all...
i hate to say it, but i'm looking at a honda too... even worse, it's piped up... okay, its a friends old ride, it's a '92 civic hatchback with the 1.7VTEC. it's got a mangnaflow cat back, a header (boy that just doesn't sound right "A header!"), an AEM short ram intake, and a full MSD ignition. so it's customized a bit, though it's pretty rough around the edges (a series of unfortunate events happend), it's red with a purple hood and a massive dent in the fender. i figure i'll get the hood painted, hammer the dent out of the fender, and maybe even repair the rust... oh well, it should get atleast 40MPG!
even with the price of fuel dropped as it has, i'll still be spending close to $2400 in fuel for the truck, so that will offset the purchase price of the car. not only that, the honda will be far cheaper to service!
