Need to fix up my engine 4.0 v6

So I just had to get my tranny rebuilt so it's all nice and spiffy, but now I'm starting to have issues with my engine. It's a v6 4.0 sohc. I wanna do some work to make it run better. Im gonna be driving my truck to South Carolina and Florida this summer and I live in PA so I want to have my truck running good and clean.

What are some things I can do to my engine. I guess a tune up, is where I should start but again any advice would be great.

Mpg is terrible. Probly getting 9 or 10.

I've had 2 rangers before and the one I have now just doesn't perform like the others. It would be nice to get some more power out of it. I'm will to fork out the cash but I'm not sure where to start.

Before you do any seriose work i would do a tune up
oil and filter change (mobil1)
plugs and wires
K&N air filter (panel)
fuel filter
PCV valve
also take it to your local dealer to get the new PCM update for better mileage

clean the throttle body as well and run some injection cleaner through the gas tank.

If you get new plug wires, check out underdog because they are closing next month and everything is on sale. they have black or red I just bought the last blue (for the 01+4.0 anyway) here's a link if you'r interested. only $25 plus shipping for a set of 8mm plug wires.

Don't run a K&N, the oil in it will gum up your MAF sensor and make it run even worse.

What type of gears are you running and what size tires?

There you go, as long as you don't drench it in oil they are ok. But if you oil them like they say to it will literally cook your MAF.
