auto to manual tranny swap

auto to manual tranny swap
Just curious if anyone has done this. I'd LOVE to have a manual in my 4.0L. What all would be involved with doing a swap and would it be worth it? I think I might be looking for someone to talk me out of it lol.
What transmission would I need to get that would hook up with the 4.0L? Could I run a tranny out of an FX4 or could I go up to Summit and pick something up?

its going to need to be out of a ranger. there are a ton of years for it. best is to find one in a junk yard and pull all the parts needed.
you need the clutch, pedal assmebly, pcm, tranny, shifters, etc... would be even better to find an 01 like yours. it needs to be 4wd too.
i wouldnt do it if it was me. I would get a shift kit and a tune up for the 5r55e and drive it. people have issues with the manual as well. slave cylinders/clutches

I've helped a friend of mine a few weeks back swap his blown up auto to a manual in the '98 4.0 4x4. big list of parts...but not that much. it was a really easy swap. Everything works flawlessly(minus the od light flashing, needs the manual trans harness to run the manual ecu he has just sitting right now). Truck is a daily and is very drivable with the light flashing.
M5od-R1 is the trans....M5od-R1hd is the trans for '01+ 4.0's. Need the pedal assy, master cyl, slave cyl, clutch disc, pressure plate, pilot bearing, alignment tool, flywheel, ecu/pcm whatever for the same engine, same year, but the manual trans. Not too positive on that...but better safe than sorry. Also going to need the manual trans electrical harness for everything to properly work. You're clutch safety switch is already bypassed...so you can put on the clutch safety switch on the master pedal shaft, but you don't have to. Might possibly need a starter, but we didn't have to.
Cam out to be right at about $1100 in the end. Using almost all new parts except the trans and the pedal assy.
All in all......it was a tues when the trans blew up. by thurs morning he had all the parts. and we were driving it with a manual on friday. only working on it after 6pm. fast swap.
If you want, there's a few threads concerning it. I could find them for you ifyou want. Maurice has a build thread..the how-to has been edited severely, but the build thread is good.
