1989 ford ranger 5.0 swap
1989 ford ranger 5.0 swap
Ok I’m getting ready to pick up a 89 ranger 2wd I want to 5.0 swap. I want to go carburetor and a manual trans but I’m having trouble finding the best manual transmission choice. What’s the best one out there?
The M5OD-R2 from a 1997-2003 F-150 with 4.2l V6, 2WD of course
The 4.2l V6 in those years used the same bolt pattern as the small block Windsor(302/5.0l), and the M5OD-R2 is the bigger version of the M5OD-R1 used in Rangers, so the shifter is in the same place as Rangers
You will need to drill out the bellhousing bolt holes 1/16" because 4.2l used Metric bolts and 5.0l uses SAE
Other 5.0l transmission shifters are either to far forward(truck transmissions) or way too far back, Mustang(car) transmissions
The truck transmissions from an earlier 5.0l can work, but shifter comes up under the dash so you need cut a hole in the floor and to make a custom shifter arm, but definitely doable
