Possible swap

Can a mustang 4.6L engine fit into a 97 ranger? If so where can I find the engine mounts and how well would it link up to the transmission?

Very very tight squeeze, width wise.

302(5.0l) is 18-3/4" wide
351W(5.8l) is 21" wide, (these are tight but workable)

Modular engines:
4.6L SOHC is 28-5/8" wide
4.6L DOHC is 30" wide

Length is the same for all, 28"

Height would also be tight so you would need to do a body lift

Good read here on the 4.6l: The Ford 4.6L Modular Engine

You would need a transmission for a Ford modular engine, any stock Ranger trans won't bolt up to it, and wouldn't last long in any case with the higher power.

In general this type of swap would be a full custom swap, meaning you will need to customize quite a few parts and engine compartment areas, so you will not just be "dropping it in" and running new wires.

Its been done but definitely not for the faint of heart/wallet lol. Trucks did it in a bseries a while back look up project rolling thunder. it was pretty all custom and it wouldn't make a good daily driver not sure what your goals are for use after swap but they literally had to remove pretty much everything and a lot of stuff was relocated to the bed to make it fit. So in the end you won't have a/c and i believe they even removed the heater core/box to make it clear so no heat/ a/c and no cargo space because the fuel cell and battery took up a huge portion of the bed. Not to mention serious work to strengthen the weak frame to handle it.
