Ultra-Gauge Support/Ordering Thread

Name:  UG.jpg
Views: 2061

I figured with everyone buying an Ultra-Gauge these days, I'd start a Support thread for anyone needing help or links to help or ordering. I have contacted Ultra-Gauge and they love the idea. They said that they just dont have time or resources to stay on all car/truck forums.

Also on a side note, Ultra-Gauge informed me of discounts that may be offered to MASS ORDERS. here is what they told me:

If I understand correctly, you would like someone at UG to become an active member on the ranger forums to answer questions and point users to information on the UG site?
We have done this on other sites. However we did so to limit the spread of misinformation that we had become aware of. I suspect it was begun by our competition masquerading as a user.
While we could provide such support our available bandwidth is limited and I'm not sure that we could keep up with the posts.
If you are willing to do it for us, we would be appreciative.
Also, in the past we have offered group discounts to forums. For example, a particular Toyota forum purchased more than 150 units. Essentially we announced a procedure and window of time for forum members to place an order. After the window had expired, all the validated members received a refund equal to the discount level the forum had achieved. For it to work, we had a volunteer on the Toyota forum that championed the whole offer.
Once I find out what the tier levels are for the discounts, I will update this thread. Then for all those interested, we can get an RF order together later.

What is the Ultra-Gauge?

Many of you may read the title and wonder what an Ultra-Gauge is. The UG (What we will call it for short) is a scan tool for any vehicle with OBD-II diagnostics. It mounts in your car/truck and plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. It actively scans the vehicle using the same sensors that the computer reads and displays that information on the LCD screen.

The UG has a total of 74 Gauges it can display. However, for the Ford Ranger, these are limited due to the sensors our trucks have. They are listed below. These gauges will displayed 6 per page on a total of three pages. So basically, you have the option of choosing up to 18 gauges to display. The pages on the UG can be set to Auto-Advance to "X" number of seconds or you can have it to a fixed screen.

One powerful tool of the Ultra-Gauge is its capabilities to Read and Clear Trouble Codes!!! It is one of the cheapest OBD-II diagnostic tools on the market. You will easily pay more than $100 for one at Advance Auto or AutoZone.

Also, the UG has Max and Min alarms that can be set for each gauge. So say if you have the engine temp max gauge at 205*F like me, and it hits that threshold, it will make an alarm. Alarmas can be suspended or turned off. Also I will provide my alarm setting tonight.

WHAT DOES THE ULTRA-GAUGE LOOK LIKE?

the UG is a nice thin compact unit. There are three buttons on the back (Menu, Up, Down) It is smaller than a cell phone. It has a nice crisp LCD blue display.

HOW DOES THE ULTRA-GAUGE MOUNT?

The UG mounts using a suction cup mount with a bendable "arm" that connects to the unit. UG.com recommends putting it in lower-left corner of window right above dash. However, for the Ford Ranger, I personally recommend placing it as far top-left of the window as possible. It will require some bending of the mounting arm into a squished "S" shape, but it can be done.

I also recommend Hiding the wire behind the A-Pillar Plastic.

WHAT COMES IN THE BOX?

The UG comes with the unit and mount

WHAT ARE THE DIMENSIONS OF THE ULTRA-GAUGE?

WHAT GAUGES ARE DISPLAYED?

Here are the Gauges for the Ranger (give or take)

* Short Term Fuel Trim Bank 2
* Long Term Fuel Trim Bank 2

* Run Time -trip
* Distance - trip
* Oil Distance
* Service Distance
* UltraGauge Temperature

Like mentioned above, the Gauges are displayed on three pages in "slots." Each slot is assigned a letter like so:

My layout is (I will fill out tonight, I cant remember them all):
  • A-MPH
  • B-RPM
  • C-ENGINE COOLANT TEMP.
  • D-INTAKE AIR TEMP
  • E-AVG MPH
  • F-Distance till empty
  • G-Inst. MPG
  • H-AVG. MPH
  • I-INST Gal./HR
  • J-AVG Gal./HR
  • K-
  • L-Time till empty
  • M-Service Oil
  • N-Service Distance (I use to keep track of tire rotation)
  • O-
  • P-
  • Q-
  • R-

WHAT KIND OF CALIBRATION IS INVOLVED?

With the Ford Ranger, there is no fuel sensor (to my knowledge). We have a float attached to a sending unit that measures based on height of fuel in the tank. SOOOOO the UG has to be calibrated. You have two calibrations you can perform. One is distance and the other MPGs.

HOW TO CALIBRATE<CLICK

This should give you a basic understanding of the Ultra-Gauge. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or post in this thread.

DIFFERENT COLOR DISPLAY

One tip for people that already have the Ultra-Gauge:

To change color of display, cut a piece of colored cellophane and place it on the screen. just make it a little bigger than the screen and wedge it in there:

here is where one user used green cellophane:

if your down for one, just go to the ordering page, you dont have to wait. I dont have any info on a group buy yet(costs per unit). I have sent admin an email at ultra-Gauge today and am waiting to hear back.

The MPG calibration is easy Rob... Fill up, hit zero MPG categories, drive i'd say 1/2-3/4 tank worth... Fill up. Go into calibration and set your MPG calibration to the number of gallons you got on fill up. This will change your calibration, from what it was reading to what you put in it. Make sure you have the exact fuel tank size set.

My manual says 19.5 gallon tank. I ran it till the low fuel light came on. Filled up and only got 16.7 gallons in it.

So I don't really know what the tank size should be. I changed it to 18 gallons. Now the DTE and fuel level are almost agreeing with the dash gauge.

Yeah, I set mine to 16.7... I've never put more than 16.7 gallons in my truck.. EVER. Though Shane swears I have the 19.xx gallon tank. I guess, it really doesn't matter what you set the tank to. If you never go below 16.7 gallons, it's like that's your 0 point.

I would absolutely love to have one of these. but i'm not OBD2. i'm thinking of downgrading in the future to a 4cyl so i could get some better MPGS goin to school. so hopefully then i'll be able to get one.

so does this clip into the mount thing (that attaches to the suction part)?

basically, could i screw the mount plate into my dash somewhere, and just pop the ultra gauge on or off as i please? i'd like that over the suction cup install.

No, it's only mount is with the suction cup. It does however clip in and out of that easily. Only thing is, you wouldn't want to take it in and out often... Unless you don't mind the wires hanging out since it has to always be plugged into your OBDII port.

That is the omly problem. The power wiredis hard wired into the device. So if uou plan on permanatly installing it its there to stay. No taking it off unless u remove the whole unit. But I have no need to so im good.

I'm sure UG will eventually come out with a removable one but until then ur stuck. That's where the price and features come it. All of its features and price outweigh that problem

I would have to agree Scott.

I calibrated my MPH today using my GPS to track me somewhere, then went in and adjusted how far I went according to my GPS vs. what the computer thinks I traveled.

Just filled up tonight, reset my tank to full in the fuel menu, and after about 1/2 tank I'm going to fill up again and go into the Calibration for MPG and adjust how many gallons I added at the pump vs. how many gallons the computer thinks I used since the "zero".

Only way you're going to get it to screw to the dash is if you made your own mount for it. But the UG one is nice because it's flexible enough to fit in almost any position you want it to, allows for movement of the screen once it's in the mount, and allows for full access to the buttons on the back of the unit.

Don't be surprised when you get it that it's small as heck. From the pics Scott posted at first, I thought it was a large LCD display. It's not, but everything is really easy to ride ignoring the size.

I'll be waiting on that mount..

yet its still bigger than the Scangauge. I was surprised too Trevor, but its the perfect size for me. I think any bigger it would be a hindrance (thats what she said...lol) Just by posting this thread and a few more regarding the UG, i should be paid commission lol!! i know of at least 10 people that have bought one after seeing the UG threads (im one of them)
