Icon5 2002 ranger transmission issue

My sons ranger has had a new column shift tube and plunger installed and then a new neutral safety switch, the problem is when he goes to put it in gear, he cannot "feel" the range selector go into the gears, when i was replacing the safety switch, the selector on transmission was going into the gears but no resistance, i could feel it very faintly going into the gears, any help would be great. thinking there is an adjustment to make the selector tighter going into gear where he can "feel" the click.
thanks

Welcome to the forum

2002 Ranger assume automatic, lol

You will need to drop/remove the transmission pan
This is a picture looking at the under side of trans with pan off: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/_6UX9itv1NM/hqdefault.jpg

You can see fingers on the external shift arm, where your safety switch is
Just inside from that is the Shift Cam, and sitting on it is the spring roller that holds cam in drivers selected position
Your spring/roller is broken of has come loose

The "detents" you feel in the cab, or at the shift arm, when you move the shifter is this Cam

Yes, this picture is of an older transmission with mechanical solenoids instead of electric, lol

From PM

I think the part was called rooster comb and detent spring roller, and used to be a package called internal linkage, lol

Google: 4R44E rooster comb and detent spring roller

4R and 5R will use same part, probably the same part in the A4LD
