awful whine

well about 2 days ago with me ridin around town i heard a high pitch whine as i was going 20 to 30 mph then it would get really low. I got up today and checked my trans fluid which was ok but i changed it anyway, now it sounds like a jet fighter taking off in my truck from 50mph and up...and the fluid level is fine and i used mercon like my hanes told me too...it also does it when im rolling to a stop with the clutch pressed or not pressed in...what could it be

You say you put Mercon oil in your manual transmission?? Mercon oil is for automatic transmissions. If that is what you did you need to replace it with 85w90 gear oil. Your rear end also uses 85w90 gear oil and if it is L/S it needs a special additive.

I had this noise on a 94 4x2 . It was the u-joint at the differential . I could have sworn it was the diff itself. The joint was still tight but when I took it apart there was zero lube inside.

These trannys call for Mercon , you're thinking of transmissions from years gone by that used gear oil ( that never had to be changed for the life of the truck).

Could it be your fan clutch is stuck, making the fan run at full engine speed?

You should be able to tell that, by revving the engine by hand with the hood open.

well it did fine on the way to school, then i deicded not to go (not doing anything today) and stopped by my moms store and sat there 20 minutes then all the way home from 50 or so up it did it...not as bad but u could barely hear it over the dumped flow...even with the clutch it you could hear it so guess it is my rear end..its not even 30 here yet so if it warms up any im going to check it then go to my locla junkyard and look for a 8.8 with 4.10s and a ls...then slap it under it since i been wantin to for a while now

will any explorer axle work and whats the numbers for a 4.10 with ls

Well, howdydo, I went and looked in my Ford Factory shop manual for my 2003 Ranger and lordy it does call for Mercon oil. Well, that should make them buggers shift lots better with 10w oil in them. WOW I had no idea they did that. What year did they start using Mercon in manual trannys?

Man, that would have made my old '66 Mustang top loader shift like butter, untill it blew.
