As the title states, my 4 wheel drive doesnt engage. no click when i flip the switch, nothing. recently i had a new slave cylinder put in at work due to pre-mature failure of the one installed 5k ago with my new clutch. we dropped the transmission and installed the new slave.

with that being said, now my 4x4 wont work, i've checked the fuses for the control modure and all the connections on the t-case... all seems to be well and fine. my question to you guys, is there another computer or control box that needs to be reset or something when you drop the tranny? or is there something else i need to look into?

i'm pretty sure this is an un-related problem... but my cruise control hasnt worked since then either, yet all the fuses and connections are in order as far as i can tell.

the truck is a 01 ranger edge with a 4.0, 5 spd and 4:10's if that helps any.

For the 4wd, do the lights do their self test when you start the truck?

 

I'm not sure. How does that effect it?

 

All I can add to this thread is that there's nothing to 'reset'...you unplug harness, drop tcase, bolt tcase back up, plug back in and it's supposed to work.

I want to say this is all a coincidence.

 

If they don't self check then the 4wd computer is not working. When mine went out it took out my switch with it.

 

Actually no they don't. All the other ones light up though.

 

It could be a fried computer or a bad switch. If you have a buddy with a 4wd Ranger try swapping with his switch and computer to see if it works. Check your fuses carfully because sometimes they will go bad but you cant see it. I have had a couple that looked fine but didn't pass power through them.

where is the computer located for the 4x4?

 

Passenger side kick panel. Ford left mine hanging when they changed it out.

P.S.- I'm not sure if any of its functions are routed though the GEM but I wouldn't think so since there is a separate computer for the 4wd. That would be a Bob question.

 

ok, so i'm gonna dick with the truck tomorrow to try all this stuff out. if none of this works i'll take it back up there and tell them they broke it? (what i dont want to do.)

basically what i'm getting here is that since the lights on the cluster for the four wheel drive dont turn on when i start the truck, something is either wrong with the switch or the computer that controls the t-case? i dont really do any driveline work so i'm pretty noobish at it.

 

Yeah with no self check then probably a fried 4wd computer. I think with a bad switch it would still flash the lights. Don't quote me on that though.

 

ok, so the self check lights come on now. but still no engagement when i flip the switch. someone i talked to earlier said something about a shift motor cleaning? if the shift motor was bound up wouldnt i hear it trying to shift?

when i try to switch into 4x4 high you cant hear anything "click" like its supposed to.

Motor cleaning

I would just get a new motor if that's what failed.

 

Had a somewhat similar problem with my truck a couple of years back - 4WD would engage/disengage intermittently when switch was activated/deactivated.

The problem was ultimatly traced to the wiring harness of the transfer case motor - a couple of the wires were frayed and causing an intermittent short and the motor could not activate/deactivate.
