Hey guys. It's been FOREVER since I've posted, however, I'm running into the recurring problem of the pinion seal leaking on my 02 FX4... 4x4 5-speed

So I tore the driveshaft off, took the yoke off, zipped off the pinion nut, and now I'm left with this:

Rear Diff pinion play

Is that way too much play or is that normal?

Also, I took off the rear diff cover and this fell out:



What does it go to?

 

Thats wayy to much play. replace bearings and it will be good to go.

Also that's your C clip to one of the axles.

 

Is it a magnet? It looks like the one that normally is stuck to the cover to collect any metal shavings/filings.

Two things though: That play is WITHOUT the pinion nut installed. Even WITH the pinion nut in there, the whole yoke had play. Do I need to worry about the crush sleeve at all? I've never touched rear diffs before other than replacing gaskets.

Other thing: That is not a magnet nor a clamp. It's a soft piece of material, almost like a gasket. No idea where it came from.

 

Alrighty soooo after A LOT of research, I've come up with most of the answers I need...

And since I can see that this forum is mostly defunct now, I'm grateful for the two replies I did receive. (does no one work on their junk anymore?)

Now, I understand that there has to be a preload on the pinion bearings (accomplished through the crush sleeve) and that has it's own torque setting. (16-29 in/lbs rotational torque, with new bearings) This is SEPARATE from the torque setting of the pinion nut itself, which is 160 ft. lbs.

What I DON'T understand, is how get that initial 16-29 ft. lbs. of torque on there. Wouldn't it just completely annihilate the crush sleeve with the 160 ft. lbs of torque?

Dunno but that's my only other question.
