Slip Yoke on driveshaft

Hey all, first post. I've been lurking for a while, but I need help. I have an 08 ranger 2wd 5speed 2.3L. It developed a transmission leak. It's not the shift rail plugs. A few weeks ago I noticed a smell of tranny fluid and when I looked under the truck I could see tranny fluid sprayed around the bottom of the truck. I replaced the transmission output seal and it started really leaking at the seal. I thought it was a faulty seal so I replaced it again with the same results. I figured I was using cheap autozone seals so I got one at the ford dealer and the leak continued.

At this point I gave up and took it to a shop. The shop called today and said that the slip yoke flange is bad and needs to be changed. I can get a new one for around $150, but I have been searching around and no one mentions that these go bad and cause leaks.

Any insight into this? Thanks

Welcome to the forum

Never heard of that happening either
But if the slip yoke is vibrating then fluid would leak out of the seal when driving(spray around), and it would wear the seal out as well over time, which would cause it to leak when parked

But if you put in 2 new seals and it still leaks then either slip yoke is vibrating or tail shaft is..................................

I know Ford used a drive shaft damper on some of the 4cyl Rangers, to stop vibrations

Is this what you have?

They could get out of balance and end up like this: https://www.ranger-forums.com/drivet...se-help-23853/
So that is a known issue with that type of slip yoke

Thanks for getting back to me.

Yes, mine does have the damper like in your link. Your explanation actually makes sense. I have not felt any driveline vibrations, but that really does not mean anything. I went to my local dealer today and ordered the part. They actually priced matched the prices on the internet! Hopefully that takes care of it. I will report back.

So after a little over a week, I'm happy to report that the leak appears to be gone. The slip yoke flange appeared to be the culprit. It had worn a groove where the oil seal sits and that is what was destroying the new oil seals. Part # F6ZZ4841BA if anyone is interested.
