Transmission compatibility

First post here guys, looking forward to learning a thing or 2. I am the new owner of a 2000 ford ranger 2.5 2wd auto that has 129k miles on it. Got it for $1000, o ly issue is that it needs a transmission. Has 2nd and reverse. My question is, will a 3.0 transmission work? Also what years will work with my 2.5?

Welcome to the forum

Manual or automatic?

No, 3.0l trans will not bolt to the 2.5l engine

You have a 2.5l SOHC Lima engine, used 1998-2001(mid year)
Its a stroked version of the 1974-1997 2.3l SOHC Lima engine

No connection to the 2.3l DOHC Duratec engine

If its an automatic you can use a 1995 - 2001 from a 2.3l or 2.5l Ranger or Mazda B2300 or B2500, 2WD not 4x4, trans model is 4R44E

If manual you can use 1988 - 2001 from a 2.3l or 2.5l Ranger or Mazda B2300 or B2500, 2WD not 4x4, trans model is M5OD-R1

As said a 4R44E or M5OD-R1 from a 3.0l or 4.0l will NOT fit on the 2.5l

You have a 4R44E model, used from 1995 thru 2000 in Rangers and Mazda B-series
Each 4R44E model has a bell housing specific to its engine so while the 4R44E was used on the 3.0l, 2.3l and 2.5l its bell housing was different for the 3.0l, 2.3l and 2.5l used the same bell housings
In 2001 mid-year Ford switch to the 2.3l DOHC Duratec engine
So a 2001 Ranger or Mazda B-series can have a 2.5l SOHC Lima engine, OR a 2.3l DOHC Duratec engine, the 2001 and up 2.3l used a 5R44E model, won't fit the 2.5l

This is a good place to look for used parts: https://www.car-part.com/

Your Zipcode
Search

New screen will popup
Select AT 2.5l

Used automatics are a roll of the dice, but some places do offer a warranty, not long but better than nothing, and its does NOT include labor
Factory automatics are usually good for 250k miles, but lots of factors for that, service being a big one, lol

will a 2002 3.0 2wd manual trans work on a 1999 3.0? My 1999’s transmission died the other week and a local wrecker has one out of an 02. Just wondering if it would work in my truck. Thanks.

Yes it will, if both are 2WD
2001 and up, manual or auto, will have an extra sensor, OSS sensor, top rear of trans, but it can be left unplugged, it was used as speed signal ONLY for 2001 and up computers

Welcome to the forum

Yes, if its from a 4.0l 4x4 Ranger, there will be 2 extra sensors on the outside of the 2007 trans, 2000 doesn't need them
Also an extra bolt hole on the 2007 bell housing, also not needed on the 2000 4.0l
Both will be 5R55x models
