Need Custom 5gl Gas Can Mount Ideas
Need Custom 5gl Gas Can Mount Ideas
I'm looking to add a 5 gallon Blitz can on my Ranger. I'd like to mount it on the right rear side above the bumper, but on a swing arm that will allow the tail gate to still open. I've seen some setups that replace the OEM bumper with a built in swing arm, but would like to do this with the OEM bumper...Has anyone done this or any thoughts?

there is only 1 swing away carrier for rangers as far as a know and its a complete bumper with spare tire moun . Its made by james duff and it won't bolt on to newer rangers. its also costs a small fortune .
Fabricating your own could be fairly easy if you keep it really simple . I think a miter saw for the metal , welder , and basic hand tools are all you would need to do it with square tubeing.

Do you have a frame mounted trailer hitch? I would fab a bracket to mount to it.
Make a post that goes from receiver out to edge of the truck. Mount a fixture on it that swings out with a pin lock device. This may change your ground clearance for 4 wheeling cause of the hitch?
I supposed you could make a bracket that mounts to the same frame holes the hitch would?

I actually just saw a swing away tire/gas can carrier that went into your receiver if your into that... I use my hitch too much so it wouldn't work for me.
Personnally, I'd get a swing away mount and weld it to your bumper if you really like the stock bumper. They're only about $60-90, plus some fab time by you or a shop.
I'll see if I can find one..

Try this link...

Basically it's a $45 trailer axle setup...

You could do something like this...

Well heres what I've come up with so far. Haven't figured all the numbers yet, just the basic design. Using a piece of black iron thick wall pipe inserted into the right corner of the bumper and welded in place as the base. Then using a piece or round stock that just fits the ID of the pipe with a washer welded as a top stop/bearing surface and a washer at the bottom kept in place via roll pin. Next using thick wall square tubing as the swing arm with a top brace welded to the main pin (round stock). I still need to figure out a latching system for the swing arm.
You've got a great idea and I'm not meaning to down you.
But
A spare gas can on the back of a truck like you want is OK for off-road and ONLY off-road.As long as you're going forward , you're not backing into something solid (tree, rock, another truck,etc..) and no one is so close behind you they run the risk of running into you.
Imagine driving down the road and some idiot decides to rearend you.
IMHO make a bracket inside the box.

Yes it would only be for off road use. I thought about putting it in the bed, but I need the bed open for carrying equipment and the tent that goes in the bed…so that’s not an option.
The bracket will allow the gas can to ride atop the bumper up against the tailgate. The design will also allow for quick removal by pulling the pin underneath for complete removal of the swing arm. I figure if I backup into something the bumper will hit first, but there’s always Murphy’s Law…if it can happen it will, but out in the desert were I usually go theres not much in the way of trees or other things to back into. If someone’s following to close and rear ends me hard enough to crush my bumper…well lets just say they’ll get theirs.
