Once you have the cluster out you will see a YELLOW wire with White stripe on the connector, thats the wire that runs to the Float in the gas tank.
Use an OHM METER
Ground one probe and put the other probe on the YELLOW wire
16ohms is EMPTY
158ohms is FULL
So it should be between those numbers
Rock the truck
OHMS should change as gas sloshes in the tank and float goes up and down
If OHMS are low, under 25, and don't change when gas sloshes around then float has a hole in it and has sunk to the bottom.

ok i will check into this ,im waiting for the warmer weather i do have a feeling the float might be bad on mine just what i have found so far ,ive only have had the truck a week so far ,any ideas how you change a float out i havnt done that one before
On Rangers it is easiest to move the bed either back, up or off.
The gas tank access hole(fuel pump and float assembly) is just behind the cab

Lowering the gas tank is an option, but you have to get it down and out to have enough room to lift out the assembly inside.
And then getting it back in and lined up is hard to do
