2006 Ranger Radio and Wipers stopped working

I upgraded my manual windows to power using factory power regulators and a simple 2 door aftermarket power window switch/wiring kit. I tested the functions using a 12v cordless screwdriver battery. Worked fine. Then, i made the mistake of adding this new small circuit to the acc radio wire. I used windows a few times, then zap. Radio and windows lost power. I checked fuses and all were good. I was surprised to see that the Ranger radio fuse is only meant to be 5 amps. In all my years the smallest amp radio fuse I'd ever seen was 10 amps. Then i noticed my wipers were not working either. I installed all new fuses in cab and under hood. No change. I removed window wire from the radio acc lead and no change. I replaced 45a 45b 46a 46b relays under the hood. No change. I ran a 12v test lead to the radio circuit and the wipers came on. While they were running if i removed the 12v test wire the wipers had power to park the blades. So at least that part of the wiper circuit still has power.

I have extensive electrical experience in 12v, 120v, and 240v systems. I wondered if this could be a fusible link or something. I was surprised to see many many cases of this happening in a Google search, but i never saw one solution and some of these posts were nearly 20 yrs old. Some mentioned the GEM found on some Ford Ranger's, but mine is a 2006 and my understanding is that they only had GEM up to 2003 models.

Someone out there must have some real answers about this. If you have no experience or first hand knowledge about this then keep your opinions to yourself. Don't be the moron to suggest that i try different brand of fuses or some other nonsense. I could just tap that circuit to new lead fed off unused fuse circuit, which is my plan for the windows as i should have done from the beginning, but i would like to find the actual issue for wipers/radio and fix them correctly.

In 2006 the radio has 3 fuses two are used to power the radio part, #6 10 amp(key on power), #24 is 20amp has full time power, it holds radio clock and presets
Fuse #21 is 5amps and only has power when key is turned to START its there to MUTE the radio when starting the engine

Fuse #5 is 30amp and used by the wipers

These are all in the cab fuse box(SJB)

Wiper fuse #5 and Radio fuse #6 do have something in common, they are both powered by one wire from the ignition switch

"2006 power1" shows the Key on power for fuses 5 and 6

Where did you get the power for the power windows?
they need at least 15amp circuit, each motor will have a 6amp startup draw, so both being used at the same time is 12amps

Wiring is rated above the fuse for that wire, so if the wire size/gauge can handle 20 amps it will have a 15amp fuse or lower, so the fuse blows BEFORE the wire melts, or the wire becomes the fuse, lol
So in theory you should blow a fuse BEFORE you ruin the wire or its connector, in theory, but if you piggy back on a fuses circuit you have to make sure you are not drawing too many amps for the wire feeding that fuse, to the ignition switch in this case, or you can fry that wire

Not helping

REMEMBER THAT I HAVE REPLACED EVERY FUSE IN CAB AND UNDER HOOD. SO FUSE ISNT ISSUE. I ALSO REPLACED RELAYS FOR RUNNING WIPERS AND PARKING.

I know the 5amp radio fuse only had power when you turn the key on, because i referred to it as acc power. Im pretty sure the 5amp wire isnt there to only mute the radio during starting. Where did you get that information? I stated that is where i connected the window circuit because i said it was the radio acc connection that i saw later only recommends 5amp fuses. I also removed the window connection as i try to determine why the power is now gone from those circuits. Typically the 12v constant only uses minimal power to hold memory settings.

This was interesting, "Wiper fuse #5 and Radio fuse #6 do have something in common, they are both powered by one wire from the ignition switch". So where does that power run through? Fuses under hood power the inside cab fuse panel and again all of those fuses have been replaced. I specifically named the relays i replaced that run the wipers. I replied all 4 of the relays i those two banks just to eliminate them as possible causes.

I appreciate the wiring diagrams. I will use them as I dig through this.

The bottom line is if you Google this issue you will see many occurrences of this happening and not one case where people had THE ANSWER. Adding something (windows) that pulls too much amperage to the acc radio line should at the most blow the 5 amp fuse. This is something bigger and i am looking for the one Ford Technician or person who has seen this get resolved to clue me in to what they found. A hidden fusable link? A unknown relay circuit not part of the fuse system? What?

Someone knows what is causing this..... It has been going on for 15 years according to Google.

The common part is the SJB, which Ford had trouble with from day one, Rangers got these in 2004
Ford would just swap these out under warranty, you don't have that option, but you can often find them in wrecking yards in good condition

I would suggest pulling it out, or at least pull off the large wire connectors and look for damaged pin/slot, the long term issue with the SJB's was corrosion, but I doubt that's your problem
2280C-pin32 is the wire that powers fuses 5 and 6, so 12v IN
2280A-4 is Wiper fuse 5 OUT
2280C-27 is Radio Fuse 6 OUT

Connector numbering seen here: https://www.therangerstation.com/for...box-jpg.30179/

The external relays, are often not used/in place

This article has pictures of the inside of an SJB: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...horn_mod.shtml

You may need to dig into the SJB to see if there was any damage internally

First, i did replace all fuses in the early part of this. From the wiring diagram and post yesterday I learned there was two ignition powered wires going to the radio. #6 was replaced with all the rest, but that was before i had removed the power window circuit. When i learned there was a second ign powered wire going to the radio I decided to check the new fuse in #6 just to be thorough and i found it was blown again. The windows are removed from the circuit and so I replaced the fuse and it's now good.

I hadn't revealed all items that didn't have power. It was the radio, the wiper run circuit, the daytime running lights, and the dome light. Others here are telling me there is no common fuse for radio and wipers, however replacing #6 fuse restored all of that instantly. Radio, wipers, daytime running lights, and the dome light all went live again when that one fuse was replaced. I ran a separate acc powered fused wire to a new relay that had a battery powered main source for the new power windows and everything is happy again.

I have no idea what witchery Ford has done with its 06 Ranger circuits, but my issue is fixed.

Glad you got it working, good work

On the fuse 5 and 6 circuit, in the diagram 2006 power1, you can see the "accessory relay" pin 85, that means that relay's coil inside the SJB is powered by fuse 6, so you would lose any circuits that the "accessory relay" powered when fuse 6 blew
It also powers "low current board" which operates other relays which could be for the the other systems that you mentioned

As far as I know Ford never published schematics for their SJBs, and they were listed as non-serviceable, and that Dealer just replaces the SJB if they think its the problem

On this diagram for Door Locks you can see the "witchcraft" of the term "low current board": https://www.fordforumsonline.com/cdn...ram-jpg.45840/

There is no wiring shown between the switches and the relays that lock or unlock the doors, just pin numbers for connector for the switches, and then relays are activated by the "low current boards", lol, its magic

SJBs were used from 2004 thru 2011 on Rangers and most other Ford cars and trucks

Curses this is sooo close to what I need

I have a 2005 ranger. Same kind of issues but my wiring doesn’t match the diagrams.
radio power on is red not light green/ violet and washer is black white but that may be correct. I will try and see if the wiper wiring works even if the radio is incorrect and see if I can get any where
