Crazy Turn Signal Problem
Crazy Turn Signal Problem
Hello everybody,
I have a 1993 Ranger with a crazy turn signal problem I cannot figure out. Well, the turn signals don't work. The hazards were working just fine, but i had not turn signal at all. As far as I can tell, there is no relay in the 93's, just two flashers (separated for hazards and turn signals). Please correct me if I'm wrong.
When they went out originally, I replaced the flasher, which didn't solve the problem. So then I replaced the multifunction switch itself. The weirdest thing happened. To test the switch, I turned on the left turn signals, and they worked. Then I flipped the switch to the right signals, they didn't work. When I tried the left again, they didn't work. Then, I tried the hazards. They flashed also for maybe four or five flashes, and i turned it off. I immediately turned the hazards back on, and they did not work.
Anyone have any ideas here? Why would the new switch work for four of five flashes, one one side only, and then not again at all? I did go for the cheaper option because the other ones, Dorman brand were over 100 dollars. Is it possible that I bought a low quality switch that just doesn't work? Any input is greatly appreciated because I'm stumped. Thanks.

Yes up thru 1994 there are two flashers
Turn flasher is in and on the front side of the cab fuse box
4-way is on the back of that same fuse box
Each has its own Fuse, key on for turns, full time 12v fuse for the 4-ways
Recheck fuses
If 4-ways were working then the wires out to all the bulbs are OK, but you need to walk around the truck to make sure all 4 corners are working
Pull out the multi-function switch again, and unplug it, have a short jumper wire you can use
Diagram is below, look at it
There are two 12volt wires coming into the switch, from fuses 4 and 5
Red/White stripe wire(R/W) has 12volts all the time, locate that wire on the connector
There is a Light Blue(LB) wire that has 12v with key ON only
There are 4 wires out to the bulbs
Light green/white for Left front and dash bulbs
Light green/orange for Left rear bulb
White/light blue for Right front and dash bulbs
Orange/light blue for Right rear bulb
Use the jumper wire from Red/White wire(always 12v) to the Left front wire, light green/white
Dash bulb should light up, it may or may not flash, thats not important right now
Do the same Red/white to each of the 4 "out to bulb" wires and the bulb should light up
And then repeat using the Light Blue wire with KEY ON, to test if that wire is OK
If all the bulbs work then new multi-function switch is indeed bad
Most Flashers NEED at least 3 bulbs connected to "flash" that's why when a bulb burns out on one side the working bulbs light up but do not flash
You said turns were not working, but 4-ways(6-bulbs) were, did you turn on Left turn and walk around the truck?
