cruise control not working after addition
cruise control not working after addition
Got a 2002 Ranger with 3.0 and it never came with cruise. It was wired for cruise so I thought I would add it. Ive installed cruise buttons, new clock spring that is for cruise capable ranger, and speed control module with appropiate cable. Never been able to get it to work. If i travel down highway at 65mph and press button the ON button and than SET ACCEL button, the cruise light on dash panel comes on but no engagement from module. I can press brake pedal and light turns off. I was thinking i need to test to see if signal to speed control unit is happening but i would think so since green light on dash comes on. Should i check certain voltages at module? Anyone have idea of which wire does what and voltages i should be getting? Speedometer works and my ABS system is healthy with no codes.
Ive tried three different speed control modules, all have the 2001 part number that was used in the 2002 model year. I would appreciate help, really want the cruise working for upcoming long trip to Florida next month.

You can run a self test on the cruise system
Key off
Press and keep holding the Cruise OFF button and turn the key on/engine off
Dash light should flash once to indicate "test mode", if it flashes 5 more times then Servo unit is bad
If just the 1 flash then release OFF and within 5 seconds press ON, should get 1 flash
Then in this order press these buttons, RSM (resume), CST (coast) and SET/ACCEL, should be 1 flash after each button press, this is just a button test
Each button press must be within 5 seconds of the last, if not then system will timeout and you must start again
After pressing set/accel there can be a delay of the one flash but if there is more than 1 flash then that's a trouble code
2 flashes brake pedal or clutch pedal switch is bad, no connection
3 flashes brake pedal switch is bad
4 flashes Speed signal was out of range from last time cruise was activated
If you just get the one flash after set/accel then Servo should now activate and pull throttle open and then let it close to test if the servo cable is binding

Test reveals On Off buttons on left work. When pressing RSM button next, no input as i get no light. I suspect problem with right side switch. Will remove and inspect ribbon cable and connection before ordering another $20 switch from ebay/amazon/carpart/etc.
I would be careful buying those cheap steering wheel cruise control buttons. I bought some to replace the broken ones on my steering wheel and they didn't work. I took it in to be diagnoses and the mechanic says its either the buttons or the inline fuse link.
He suggested replacing both (of course).
Edit: Try going for an aftermarket part from Dorman or a more reputable brand. Or find an OEM/OE one. Rock Auto sells OEM ones but they are a bit pricy. Dorman makes one that I've seen for sale on Walmart.com for like 70 bucks.
