My 99 cranks but no start!! Anyone got any clues?
The engine cranks but theres no spark. I replaced the plugs and wires. Was underneath when a friend turned the key and heard the wine of the fuel pump priming. Checked the inertia shutoff and it was not tripped. Could see the fuel on the old plugs as i pulled them out (yeah they were beat.) I checked all my fuses and they all have continuity. Anyone got any ideas? I did hear a bad crankshaft position sensor could give me no spark
Always good to include the engine model
3.0l Vulcan?
And 1999 V6 will have PATS(passive anti-theft system) so there is a THEFT light on the dash
If the THEFT light starts to Flash Rapidly with Key On then engine can not be started, wait 60 seconds(key on) and THEFT light will start to flash a 2 digit code, 11 to 16, that code will tell you why PATS disabled startup
Does the CEL(check engine light) come on with key on, that means computer has booted up OK, flashing CEL means computer issue
Does the CEL go OFF when starter motor is activated(engine spins), it should, that means computer is getting a valid timing signal from Crank Sensor
The Crank sensor starts the ball rolling for spark and injectors, the computer has no connection to starter motor system, it only knows you want to start the engine when it sees a timing pulse from crank sensor
It then starts Spark first, and after 1 second it starts injectors
You said spark plug tips were wet with "fuel" that would indicate computer has valid timing signal
I would check again by pulling one, easy to get at, spark plug and check its tip after cranking the engine, if its WET then also LIGHT that tip with a match or lighter to see if it is indeed "fuel", should burn fast and bright
(More than a few people have got water in their tanks, and water is heavier than gasoline so settles to the bottom, where fuel pump sucks it in)
You can do 50/50 test
Spray "fuel", quick start or gasoline, into the engine
Try to start
If it fires up, runs and dies then spark is OK
If it doesn't start then spark is the issue
50/50 no guessing
Coil pack has a 4 wire connector
The red wire should have 12volts with key on, check for that
That 12v powers all 3 coils in the coil pack, it comes from fuse 19 in cab fuse box, 25amp, but this fuse also powers up computer, so there would be no CEL with key on if it was blown
The engine would fire even if 2 coils in the pack failed, so unless there is no 12v at the coil pack its unlikely to be a coil pack issue
3.0l Vulcan was unique for a few years in that a bad Cam Sensor could cause a crank/no start
Cam sensor is connected by a shaft to the oil pump, so Fords thinking was that if the Cam sensor is not sending a good signal, then engine should not be started, and it would also stall the engine when driving
In 1999 Cam sensor should be a 2 wire sensor(3 wire in 1998 and earlier) at the top rear of engine, unplug it and plug it back in to clean its contacts, see if that helps

It's a 3.0 Vulcan
I found my can of starting fluid earlier today (thieving brother) it started right up after i sprayed some in and then turned the key. So it was the fuel pump after all. The noise i heard was from the high pressure pump. I knew the pump was on its way out because it would be on 1/2 tank then suddenly drop to empty or i would stick 10 bucks in it and read 1/2 tank, fill it up and it would read 3/4 plus it started to hesitate while driving and i am also replacing the leaf spring bushings and shackles (they look like they from 99 too) as well as take a wire wheel to the frame since the bed had to get unbolted for it anyway (gotta get that rust when it starts or well you know what it can liok like after a year) unfortunately the part wint be here till saturday morning and ive got 350sq ft of flooring to pick up as well as 40 cinder block for an additions foundation smfh this **** never happens whenbi got absolutely nothing to do rite?
