What year trannies can I swap?

Hello, I have a 98 b4000 4x4 4.0 and I need to swap the 5r55e. I plan on being cheap and going to a pick n pull, but what year rangers can I use?

ive found a perfect 1999 but the guy at B&R auto wrecking told me that the 98 ranger can’t swap with any other year. I don’t want to go pull a 99 and mid swap find that it won’t mount up.

Not sure why he would say that
1999 5R55E from a 4.0l 4x4 should work just fine in your 1998

In 1999 the Coast sensor was eliminated but it was actually never used, it is toward the front by bellhousing on outside of trans
Fords recommended fix for 1997/98 trans swaps is to cut this sensor's 2 wires and connected ends of wires together to eliminate computer setting a code

So as long as it’s a 98-00 I should be safe? That link says they added in the sensor in 01.

Yes they added a sensor(ISS) but you don't need to use it, so should be fine up to 2011, for Rangers
16 pin Wiring was the same
2001 and up have an extra bolt hole in bellhousing, near the top, that you also won't use

Picture of ISS sensor location here: http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0010_large.jpg

This is only on 2001 and up 5R55E, which means you can't use a 1997-2000 5R55E in a 2001 and up Ranger, but swapping the other way is fine

Your 1998 will have the 16 pin plug in and then the rear 2 wire plug in for the OSS sensor
It may also have another 2 wire plug with sorter wires for the CCS sensor, cut plug off and twist wires together then seal connection

,This is for Rangers and B4000's, Explorers used a different 5R55 transmission in 2002 and up, even with the same 4.0l engine
