Welcome to the forum
You need to use the PATS Key from the 2003 Ranger
The 2001 3.0l key won't work
PATS is passive anti-theft system
Each PATS key has a unique number in its handle
When key is turned on an antenna around the key slot picks up that number and its is compared to the 3 or 4 Key numbers that came with the truck when new
If there is a Match found then Theft Light goes off, and you can start the engine
If no match is found then Theft light flashes rapidly and no start, start motor AND fuel injectors/fuel pump are OFF
So no work around
The theft light will flash a code after 60 seconds or so, two digit, 12 to 16 that will tell you why PATS turn on the No Start
These PATS keys are often called "transponder keys"
And just a heads up, if you try to start it 3 or 4 times and get flashing Theft light each time, then computer shuts down for 90min or so because it thinks its a Theft attempt of the vehicle, so even if you fix the problem you won't know, lol
Unhooking the battery doesn't matter you just have to wait
So wait a bit if you think you solved the problem
There is a Software called Forscan that allows you to Add Keys to the PATS system, not sure if the FREE version can do it, but its not expensive to buy, you need a laptop and the cable to plug it in to vehicle
You can also have a mobile locksmith come out with a Laptop and Ford software, they can add keys to PATS as well
If you have a key from the 2003 but not the lock cylinder
Then wrap your 2001 3.0l key's handle in foil so it can't send out its number
Then put the 2003 keys handle on top of ignition cylinder key slot and turn on the 3.0l key
See of Theft light comes on and goes OFF
If so you can start the engine and drive it, but if you shut off the key then PATS comes on again, so no restart unless you do the same thing again
wrap key in foil because if two numbers are sent the reader will get confused so won't accept either number
