I just picked up a 2010 Ranger XLT 2wd 4cyl auto with only 21,000 miles. 1 owner truck that the guy barely drove.
I purchased it from a dealer here in San Diego.
The truck is in great shape. It came from the east coast but thankfully has very little rust. The frame is spotless but the leaf springs, rear shocks and diff all have surface rust. Nothing serious but should I treat it with something. I'm in the Southwest things dont rust here, so I'll probably just leave it alone unless suggested otherwise.
I'm thinking the previous owner had a small boat or jet skies as I only see the rust on the rear suspension. Like I said though, its very minor. Body and frame are thankfully ok.
Truck runs great aside from a noise at idle. I made a post in the 4cyl section if you're interested
Not a RED Ranger but very nice looking and clean Ranger(I only like RED Rangers, so it's definitely a "Its me not you" thing, lol)
You have a 2.3l DOHC Duratec(Mazda L) engine, used from 2001 thru 2011 in Rangers, good reliable engine
Rangers also used 2.3l SOHC Lima engine 1983 to 1997 so if you search using "Ranger 2.3l" you will get conflicting results
2.3l Ecoboost(turbo'ed 2.3l Duratec) is also used in the 2019 and up Rangers, lol, so even more conflicting info
You have a 5R44E Automatic, used from 1985 to 2011 in Rangers, as A4LD, then 4R and finally 5R starting in 2001
26 year run so a good reliable automatic, as far as automatics go, lol
Service it and put in a 2nd trans cooler and it will last

Thanks!
I'm learned the hard way about all the different 2.3l. I knew about the EcoBoost, my wife has an Explorer with the 2.3 eco. So yeah finding info is frustrating.
Thanks for the info and the tip on the tranny cooler. I had heard that was recommended on the V6 trucks, wasn't sure if the 4cyl needed one too. I'll add one for sure. It gets hot AF here in summer and I want it to last.

Outside of a mechanical failure the primary reason automatics fail is trans fluid temps above 200degF over time, they should run 180-195degF, like the engine coolant
I don't work on transmissions so I try to PREVENT them from needing work, lol
Don't care about engines, I can fix those, so rarely even change the oil................joking, but not far off, lol
No reason an automatic can't do 300k miles before it needs clutches, like a manual trans does
The trans does have a temp sensor built in and you can view the temp on an OBD2 reader in real time
The Bluetooth readers are under $20 and work on ANY vehicle sold in the US since 1996, so not a Ford thing, a good tool to have available
