91 Ranger Reservoir Water Level Switch Removal

I have to replace my water reservoir on 91 Ford Ranger, 4 L, V6. The new replacement didn't come with the water level switch or sensor so I'll need to remove the old one and insert it in the new reservoir. Does anyone have an idea how to remove that switch. It is in there pretty tight. Looking in the hole on the new one, there doesn't seem to be any threads, but there is a notch at the bottom where the switch could possibly rotate and lock into place. That area is dabbed with silicon grease. I tried to buy a new one but they don't seem to carry that part anymore.

Never seen a Coolant level sensor on a Ranger before???

Could you be looking at the Washer Fluid Pump?
And 1991 didn't have a washer fluid level sensor either if memory serves?

Thanks Ron, for the reply. I'll try to take a picture of it later. It is some kind of sensor with electrical wires. It's plugged into the water coolant side of the reservoir, not the washer side. I'll take another look and make sure about that.

Did some looking at replacements and some do say "W/O"(without) Low fluid sensor, so it WAS an option, just never seen it myself on a Ranger

But didn't find any WITH low fluid sensor(hole)

Hi Ron- I feel a little silly now. I checked to see if that thing was on the coolant side and sure nuff, you are correct. It is on the washer side, so this must be the washer pump. Do you have any idea how to remove it. I could come straight out but I'm afraid I'll break it.

Usually there is a rubber grommet in the hole, Washer pump is just pushed in or pulled out of the grommet, twist it back and forth while pulling it out
Then transfer grommet to new tank if it doesn't have one

Thanks so much for the advice. I'll give it a try. I think it loosened up when I pushed the edges with a small screwdriver.

I wanted to leave a final update. The pump has metal retaining ring that has gear like barbs, which dig into the edges of the hole. I pried under it and popped the ring out and the pump slid out easily. I found those pumps in stock at auto zone and they include a new retainer with it.
