Gas mileage

Gas mileage
My 1998 Mazda B3000 3.0 4wd had a little leak in heater hose T couple weeks ago. Replaced the T and sending unit. To get to it though, you have to take a few things off. My dad who drives the truck swears he went from 15mpg down to 12mpg since work was done. Is there anything I could possibly do to improve mileage? Everything looks like was installed properly. I didn’t do work. Trust the fellow who did the work. He’s been a mechanic as long as I’ve been driving. Anything with air intake, etc that might be not exactly right? No CEL.

Can't think of anything off hand
The "T" is for the heater on the upper intake throttle body, prevents icing in colder climates
Many in warmer climates just replace heater hoses with no "T's" so no heater and no reports of changes to MPG, either way
Thats a pretty big drop in MPG, how many tanks of gas, or how many miles driven were used in that new calculation?

Knowing how my dad drives, probably only been one tank. He pretty much drives same places everyday. Probably got gas a day earlier and made him suspicious. Tried to explain we didn’t buy a gas saver, bought a truck he could take hunting and not worry about sand and wet conditions. My first truck was an 86 B2000 with 4 cylinder and five speed. Could drive for days without gas hand moving. He wants same from this truck I think :). But just wanted to ask to be sure. Thanks for help.
