Curious- did this fuel pump issue start after you body lifted? In the jeeps and broncos I've lifted most of the time I had to add an extension to the fuel fill line and the vent line, usually te vent line would kink a little bit and cause the gas pump shutoff issue when filling. Which is usually how i figure it out, but it does something to **** off the tank mounted fuel pumps, dont know if it pushed too much pressure on the lines or what but fixing the vent usually worked for me. Never had a canister problem so I cant say one way or te other. Btw - first post on this forum from PNG. Damn is this expensive. Good luck.

I believe it has something to do with vacuum and fuel system.
Maybe Ford moved it from the engine compartment to under the bed but who knows.
Is your gas cap new, maybe now creating vacuum there either ?

Sorry for all of the ideas but not much to back them up, but just thinking aloud.
Maybe something to talk over with a real mechanic.

luck,

charcoal canister collects the fumes from the gasoline coming from the vents and burns them when the vehicle is started... or something like that. the whole point of it is to not get the gas smell coming from your vehicle when it is parked like a car with a carburator

Sorry to butt in....Does the 96 have one? I get a Gas smell from my truck around the Driver side Fender area.....I have double triple checked my fuel lines and they are not crimped or leaking...and I don't see any obvious canister.

Black plastic box in the driverside front corner of the engine compartment with a domed cap or two on it.

As far as the tach goes, maybe a connection problem? If the ground you added is not perfect, it might be jumping between the 6 and 8 cylinder readings. I'd also run the tach "selector" ground to a different place than the other gauge grounds. That's how Ford did it and they probably had a reason. You probably already have it that way but thought I should mention it.

I forget, are you running my alternator or was it my starter or both? For whatever it's worth, they never gave me any trouble.

Sucks, lucky DV8 is right around the corner so i called up my buddy over there to pick me up. oh tried to jump it and still nothing. we left it there and now i am home. this has happened before if anyone recalls and it was the freakin negative battery terminal being retarded so thats where i am going to start when i can get back up there saturday.. the pains i go thru..

Do your positive battery cables have one or more fusible links? If so, those could be smoked. Try an end-to-end continuity check on the cables.

They do have the fusabel links on them. I havent been able to get to them to check them. I really want to rip out all the wiring and redo it all with better cable. anyone know if audio power wire is acceptable?

I dont think i have my original book. which relay is the starter relay in the underhood fuse box?

For the 2002 Ranger V6, it should be the full size relay in the passenger side rear corner of the Distribution Box. The owners manual shows it as #56.

If you are re-doing your battery wires, I know the Advance Auto I work at sells 2ga battery wire by the foot for like $2/ft. May be worth checking into.

There should not be any fuses or fusible links in the heavy positive cable between the battery and starter. The fusible links should be in the lighter positive cables between the alternator and the battery/Disrtibution Box. I don't remember how the Ranger and Explorer starting and charging systems were grafted together in your swap.
