Front differential

I have a 1996 ranger with 4.10 gear ratio. My front diff is pretty much shot from what I can tell. Ring and or pinion seems to be stripped but I haven’t taken it apart to confirm. I’ve been looking everywhere trying to find a diff out of a junkyard but haven’t had much luck. Im fairly certain I have what I’ve seen referred to as a “Dana 35 hybrid” which is essentially a 35 housing with 28 internals. Every junkyard I’ve called has said that they didn’t make a 35 in 4:10 so I’m guessing this is what they are considering a 28. So far I’m just pretty well confused and don’t really know what to do. I’ve found a couple diffs that can be shipped to me but I hate to order something and end up with the wrong thing. Any advice?

Good article to read here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...les-1983-1997/

Easy to see what you have by looking at the housing from the rear

All versions came in 4.10, so bogus info there, but..............................
Tell them you are looking for a 1992 or earlier Dana 35, if Dana 35 is what you have in your 1996, and 4.10 will come up

1993 was first year for second generation Rangers and 4.10 wasn't very common in Dana 35's just in the hybrids

You can just get the parts to rebuild what you have

Thanks. That is the article I used to help determine I had a hybrid. I’m assuming that it is still technically considered a 28 though correct?

I have thought about getting the parts to rebuild it myself but have been talking myself out of it since I’ve never really been into a diff before but the videos I’ve watched make it look fairly straight forward. Any suggestions on where to buy parts?

Its all in the pinion shims and tooth pattern check.
you’ll need a dial indicator set also.

A inch lb. and a Ft lb torque wrench are needed also.
