First thing is that all automatics have integrated Bell housing, the part that bolts to the engine, and the 4x4 part means you need an automatic from a 4x4 as well.
So you don't just need a 4R55E you needs a 4R55E from a 4.0l engine, one from another size engine won't bolt to your engine.
And it must be from a 4x4 4.0l, you can't just swap tail shafts like with some manual transmissions, the main shaft needs to be swapped, it can be done just need full rebuild to do it, same as bell housing, it can be swapped but only with full rebuild

4R55E was used from 1995 to 2001 on Rangers w/4.0l and Mazda B4000 trucks, and would need to be 4x4

4R55E is a slightly heavier build 4R44E, 4R44E were used with 2.3l and 3.0l engines, so wouldn't fit the 4.0l engine bolt pattern, but outside of the heavier duty parts they are the same trans inside.

I think they did use the 4R44E in '95/'96 for the explorers with 4.0l engine, which would fit you 4.0l, and they were for the most part 4x4s

The 4R means 4 speed, 5R is a 5 speed
44E is standard electronic shift
55E is heavy duty electronic shift

You can't use a 5R55E, there was never a computer made for the 4.0l OHV engine and 5-speed automatic, and these "E" transmissions all need computer control for shifting
