Ford ranger transmission swap
Ford ranger transmission swap
Hi, in the future I plan on swaping the engine in my Ford ranger from a 3.0l to the explorer 5.0l. I plan on using the T-5 transmission from a mustang. Would 4x4 still be an option even with the mustang trans?
Welcome to the forum
Simple answer is no
T5s are not all the same, read here: T5 History in Ford Mustangs with specifications for World class and non-World class T5's Modern Driveline
There were T5s used in 4x4s but not the Mustang type of T5
About 15 years ago 'they' stopped making a 4x4 adapter housing that used a Jeep tail shaft, the adapter and tail shaft haven't available for many many years
Also a heads up
Measure where the shifter is in the Mustangs T5 and where it will need to come up thru the floor of the V8 Ranger............................it will be between the seats, so..........that will need to be dealt with

Yes, it will if it is from an 1997-2003 F-150 with 4.2l V6 engine, the 4.2l V6 has same transmission bolt pattern as the 5.0l V8, windsor pattern
The M5OD-R2(M5R2) is the beefier version of the Rangers M5OD-R1(M5R1), it was used in F-series 2WD and 4x4 Ford trucks with 4.2l V6 and Modular V8s
The M5R2 1997 to 2003 has shifter in the same place as the Rangers, 1" difference
If you want 4x4 then you need to get the M5R2 AND Transfer case from 4x4 F-150, and it must be from 4.2l V6, these M5OD series do NOT have detachable bell housings
And just a heads up if you get this transmission, the 4.2l use metric bolts thru bellhousing, 5.0l used SAE, so you need to drill out the bell housing bolt holes slightly, reem them out a bit, not a big deal at all....... unless you are trying to do it with transmission in place, lol.
So check bolt size and modify it, while trans is sitting on the ground
